Chapter 3: Memories and Conversations
As the ceremony concluded and the guests began to disperse, Jules waited outside, calling a cab. She stared at the sky, her mind spinning through memories of a boy she’d loved deeply as a friend. She heard footsteps behind her and turned to find Michael standing there, hands in his pockets, looking unsure of what to say.
“How have you been?” he finally asked, the weight of his question heavier than she could bear.
Jules swallowed, a mix of sorrow and longing filling her chest. The question felt like a sad echo of the life they’d once shared. “I’ve been… fine. Busy with work and life. And you?”
Michael’s lips tightened as he nodded. “The same, I guess. It’s been a long time.”
They stood in silence, neither quite sure how to bridge the gulf between them. She wanted to tell him about her life, about the countless moments she wished he’d been there. She wanted to ask him why they’d let so many years pass without a word. But the words lodged in her throat, tangled with grief and longing.
