The night sky hung heavy with clouds as they approached Vanguard's headquarters, the building looming like a fortress against the dark. Shadows danced around them as they navigated the perimeter, adrenaline coursing through their veins.
"Zane, you're on distraction duty," Aria instructed, her voice firm but steady. "When we get the signal, make sure to draw their attention away from the main entrance."
Zane flashed a confident grin, his earlier tension replaced by a spark of excitement. "Got it. Just keep your phones on; I'll make sure to keep the show entertaining."
With the plan set, the group split up, hearts racing. Zane sauntered off, his demeanor effortlessly charming as he approached the nearest guard. Lucian watched him go, admiration mixed with concern churning in his stomach.
"Let's move," Dante said, his focus unwavering. He turned, leading the way through a side entrance while the others followed closely behind.
Once inside, the atmosphere shifted. The sterile halls echoed with the sound of their footsteps, the fluorescent lights casting harsh shadows across their faces. Aria moved ahead, her laptop in hand, quickly scanning for the nearest security terminal.
"There's one," she whispered, pointing to a small room. "We can disable the alarms from there."
They entered the room, and Aria worked quickly, fingers flying over the keyboard as she hacked into the system. The others stood watch, eyes darting toward the door as tension coiled around them like a noose.
Dante leaned against the wall, feeling the heat of Zane's earlier words still echoing in his mind. He could sense Zane's presence just beyond the door, the unshakeable bond between them pulling at him. He wanted to protect Zane, wanted to keep him close, but that instinct clashed with the desire to give him the freedom to fight.
"Almost done," Aria murmured, breaking his train of thought. "Just need a few more seconds."
Suddenly, the door burst open, a pair of guards flooding into the room, weapons drawn. Lucian reacted first, pushing Aria behind him, his usual playfulness replaced by fierce protectiveness.
"Run!" he shouted.
Dante was on the move before the words left Lucian's lips, rushing forward to engage the guards. He felt the instincts from his time at Vanguard kick in, every movement precise and calculated. But even in the heat of the moment, he couldn't shake the worry gnawing at him.
Zane appeared in the doorway, a wild grin on his face. "Thought you could use a little distraction," he quipped, tossing something behind the guards that exploded into a burst of colorful smoke.
"Nice timing!" Lucian yelled as he sidestepped one guard's swing, knocking him off balance. Dante seized the opportunity, taking down the second guard with a swift, practiced move.
In the chaos, Dante caught Zane's eye, the connection between them sparking with an intensity that sent a jolt through him. The smoke was thick, creating a haze that blurred the line between friend and foe. But in that moment, it didn't matter—he could see Zane, and Zane could see him.
They fought together, a rhythm they had unknowingly choreographed through years of shared struggle and survival. When Dante blocked a punch, Zane was there, following up with a kick. Each movement synchronized, each glance a silent promise.
Aria finished her work just as the guards crumpled to the ground. "We're in," she announced, her voice tinged with exhilaration.
"Let's go!" Lucian urged, leading the way as they rushed through the door, hearts pounding and adrenaline surging.
