They descended deeper into the building, their breaths heavy and quick, moving like a cohesive unit. Aria's confidence grew as she navigated the network, the hum of machinery guiding her forward.
"We need to access the server room," she said, her focus unwavering. "That's where they store the incriminating files."
"Lead the way," Dante replied, glancing at Zane, who was adjusting his disguise, ever the master of adaptability.
As they reached the door to the server room, Dante stepped forward, feeling the weight of the moment settle over them. They were so close, yet the air thrummed with uncertainty.
"Zane," Dante said, his voice low, "be careful."
Zane met his gaze, a flicker of something profound passing between them. "I always am," he replied, but the seriousness in his tone felt heavier than a joke.
Aria pushed the door open, and they flooded inside. The room was dimly lit, filled with rows of servers humming softly. Aria wasted no time, moving to the main terminal as the others stood guard.
Lucian kept watch, adrenaline sharp as he scanned for any approaching threats. Dante and Zane moved to the far side, exchanging a quick glance.
"Hey," Zane said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "You doing alright?"
Dante paused, the question carrying more weight than it should have. "I'm fine."
Zane stepped closer, the distance between them shrinking, tension building like a live wire. "You're not fine. You've been carrying this weight for too long."
Dante's heart raced, the space between them crackling with unexpressed feelings. "It's just... I can't lose you," he finally admitted, the vulnerability spilling out before he could stop it.
Zane's expression shifted, a mix of surprise and something deeper. "You won't," he promised, a warmth flooding his gaze. "Not now. Not ever."
Before he could think, Dante leaned in, closing the distance completely. Zane's eyes widened, a breathless moment hanging between them, charged with unspoken truths.
But the moment shattered as alarms blared through the building, lights flashing red.
"Aria, what did you do?" Lucian shouted, his voice sharp.
"Nothing! I just need a minute!" Aria replied, panic lacing her words as she typed furiously.
"Let's move!" Dante barked, his instincts kicking in as he pulled Zane along with him.
Aria finally hacked into the system, pulling up the files that could save them, their future dangling by a thread. "Got it! Now let's go!"
They retraced their steps, adrenaline fueling them as they dashed down the halls, the sound of footsteps echoing behind them. Vanguard was mobilizing, but so were they.
As they burst through the back exit, fresh air hit their faces, and the weight of the world momentarily lifted. Zane turned to Dante, urgency in his eyes. "We can't let them get to us. We fight back, right?"
Dante nodded, determination flooding him. "Right."
