"You think you're so great. Well, news flash. You're not!"

"Don't forget who you're talking to, halfling."

I woke up to Vivi knocking on my door. As I go to answer she flings my door open, "Happy birthday! How does it feel to be 16?" She asks, clearly excited about the day. I groan, I completely forgot that today was my birthday. I never really celebrate it, especially since Rioben took me in. He tries, but it's never been the same since my mom disappeared.

"It feels the same as being 15..." I say truthfully, since I can't lie.

"You mean, you forgot till I barged in here" Vivi laughs, I'm glad she's not upset.

"Maybe..."

Vivi laughs more at this, and I join her. We laugh till I fall, which makes Vivi laugh even more. I sit there, on the floor, watching her laugh at me. "How did you fall?"

"I don't know" I say sharply, though I did not mean to. "Sorry... I didn't mean to snap like that"

Vivi tells me I'm too kind, which, maybe I am. But, in my defense, I simply cannot lie, so how in the world would I be mean without meaning it? It seems simple, just mean to be rude, but I can't, it doesn't work like that.

She helps me up and we go down to the Court of termite's dinner table. As we sit waiting for food, Vivi tells me about one of the princesses of Elfhame. I've never really been to the Palace, where the High King is. But I have been to the lesson group. I'm sure that counts, but it's something. She mentions Cardan, a prince who has a bigger ego than Madoc (Vivi's father). I feel my stomach tighten upon hearing his name, he makes me sick, he's horrible.

"He has a tail apparently." I blink twice. he has a what? A tail?

"What? he has a tail?" I try to think of Cardan with a tail, I mean... I see it. But what would his tail look like?

"Yeah. I saw it when we were swimming last weekend " My eyes widen. They went swimming? why? I mean, I knew they were friends, but they swam together. "It's nothing like that, stop. Anyways, I thought that for your birthday we could go to barns and noble. Since I know how you're running out of books."

I smile widely, "You really do love me." She rolls her eyes as the breakfast our Imps made. "Of course, I love you" she says. I smile and eat the Crêpes in front of me. This has to be, by far the best Mortal food there is. That and bubble tea, "hmm, hey can we also get bubble tea?" I pled.

She laughs and says, "God, you're expensive. But sure, we can." I look at her dumbfounded for a sec, then I realize Vivi can lie, and she's being sarcastic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vivi lets me change and then we go to the Mortal world. Vivi takes me to get bubble teas first then to the bookstore.
"Vivi! Look, it's Powerless!" I pick it up and look at her. She smiles and makes a gesture telling me to get it. I pick it up and add it to my pile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That was the best birthday I've had in a while. I think it was sweet of Vivi to do this for me. The night ended with Rioben stopping by my room with some coffee and saying happy birthday. I love him, even if he technically kidnapped me.
