The towering man stepped forward, and Lucy felt a bone-deep chill prickling at her skin. The air grew heavier, as if the very atmosphere around her had thickened with foreboding. His face was partially obscured by the shadows, but his eyes shone with a cold, unnatural gleam, reflecting the faint moonlight like twin shards of ice. Two sleek, spectral hunting dogs flanked him, their dark coats blending seamlessly into the surrounding shadows, eyes like twin icy flames that tracked her every movement with unnerving precision.
The figure's piercing gaze fell upon Lucy, and she felt as though he was looking straight through her, peeling back layers of her very essence to see the celestial keys hanging at her waist, her lifeline to the spirit world. His eyes gleamed with a mixture of fascination and malice, an unsettling smile tugging at the corners of his lips as if he relished the very notion of her fear.
"Celestial mage," he addressed her, his voice a whisper that nonetheless cut through the thick silence like a knife. "I see you hold the keys to realms you scarcely understand." His words slithered through the air, sending shivers coursing down her spine.
Lucy took a wary step back, instinctively placing herself between the figure and her friends. Her grip tightened around her keys, her fingers brushing over each one, seeking solace in their presence. "Who are you? What do you want?" she asked, her voice steady but edged with caution, her heart racing beneath the weight of his scrutiny.
His gaze never wavered, unwavering as a predator locked onto its prey. "Those keys are dangerous in hands as inexperienced as yours. You're meddling with forces far beyond you. Hand them over, and I will spare you the... consequences." The corners of his mouth twisted into a smirk, hinting at a cruelty that made her stomach churn.
Lucy's eyes narrowed, a spark of defiance igniting in her chest. "These keys aren't just objects. They're part of me and my connection to the spirits. I won't just hand them over because you demand it." Her heart surged with conviction, her determination casting a light against the encroaching darkness.
A flicker of irritation crossed his face, but he composed himself quickly, his tone chillingly calm, as if he were discussing the weather rather than threatening her existence. "Spirits are not companions for the living; they are power incarnate, meant to serve. I won't ask again, girl."
Natsu stepped forward, fire already sparking in his fists, the flames reflecting in his fierce gaze. "You think we're just going to let you take her keys? You've got another thing coming!" The heat radiating from him filled the air, a vibrant contrast to the icy demeanor of their foe.
Ignoring Natsu, the figure's gaze bore down on Lucy, a strange mix of hunger and curiosity gleaming in his eyes. "You have something special, girl—something I've seen only rarely. You have the Ursa Major key, don't you? A rare, ancient key connected to forces that go beyond the ordinary constellations."
Lucy's hand instinctively went to the Ursa Major key, a sense of protectiveness flooding her. "If you know about Ursa Major, then you know it's a spirit that guides, that helps, not something to be hunted or controlled. It chose me." Her voice was unwavering, fueled by the bond she shared with her spirits.
The man's lips curved into a smirk, his expression dripping with condescension. "Spirits do not choose, nor do they 'help.' They are powerful tools if wielded correctly." He extended a hand, and shadows pooled around his fingers, gathering into a swirling, dark mist that stretched toward her, an ominous promise of what lay ahead. "Give me the keys, or I will take them."
With a swift motion, Lucy raised her own hand, readying to call forth one of her celestial spirits, the weight of her resolve steadying her. "You'll have to get through my spirits first!" The air around her shimmered with potential, electric and alive.
Natsu stepped up beside her, flames now fully engulfing his hands, his stance solid and ready for a fight. "Lucy doesn't have to fight you alone," he growled, the warmth of his fire contrasting sharply with the encroaching shadows, a beacon of hope in the gathering gloom.
Orion's eyes flicked between them, sizing them up as though calculating the odds. "So be it," he muttered darkly, shadows pooling around his figure as he prepared to strike.
In an instant, the eerie calm of the forest was shattered, the silence giving way to the tension of the impending clash. The world around them felt electric, charged with danger. The night air crackled with anticipation as Lucy felt the weight of destiny bearing down upon her. She had to protect her keys, her friends, and the spirits they served.
Lucy found herself face-to-face with the hunter, who raised a hand cloaked in shadows, dark energy pulsing at his fingertips like a living thing. The intensity in his gaze was unwavering, and with each step he took, she felt the pressure of his presence bearing down on her like an oppressive fog. She gripped her keys tighter, calling on her magic to push back against the darkness that seeped from him.
"Natsu!" she called, glancing over her shoulder for the reassurance of her friends. But when she looked back, Natsu and Happy were nowhere in sight. Panic clawed at her, the realization that she was alone striking harder than the shadows closing in around her.
