CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

The days seemed to slip away too quickly, and it felt almost unacceptable. Daddy had planned a special dinner for the three of us—not at a fancy restaurant, but right at home, where he would cook for us. And when Daddy cooks, it's impossible to resist; you might even find yourself wanting to eat your own fingers!

The menu was still a mystery, but there was a surprise in store for Maa and Daddy. Ahaan would be joining us too. I love that he and I are growing closer now. After spending time apart for our studies in different corners of the world, we've found a way to bridge the gap. We might not see each other every day or talk constantly, but the bond we share feels deeper than a typical sibling connection—it's more like friendship, built on trust and shared secrets.

Surprisingly, Ahaan and Anoushka are still dating, and I couldn't be happier for them. I'm a bit unsure how my parents will react, especially since Anoushka is my age and three years older than Ahaan. But that's a worry for another day. Right now, I'm eagerly anticipating Ahaan's big surprise entrance for our parents.

As Daddy started his preparations in the kitchen, I grabbed mats and chairs and set up the porch, turning on the fairy lights in the backyard to create a magical atmosphere.

Just as I was about to call Ahaan, I heard Maa squeal with surprise. I rushed over to see her wide-eyed and beaming as Ahaan hugged her from behind. I slapped my forehead, laughing at the delightful scene, while Daddy wore a knowing smile—after all, he's a father, and a great one at that.

Sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve such amazing people, especially Daddy, who always puts my needs before his own. I don't think he's ever said no to anything I wanted. Yet, I can't shake this feeling of disappointment. He always dreamed of me becoming a scientist, and when I switched my path, I know it must have upset him. Back then, I was too stubborn to admit I might be in the wrong. I thought my parents were holding me back from what I loved, but now I see they were only trying to guide me.

I don't even know how many times a day I pray and apologize, wishing to be forgiven. Even if they don't say it, I can sense their disappointment. Oh God, please let me be worthy of their love and wise enough not to let them down again.

Lost in my thoughts, Ahaan playfully pushes me, breaking my reverie. I try to push back, but with his tough build, it's like trying to budge a wall. Plus, being shorter than him doesn't help! He laughs at my futile attempts. I stick my tongue out and give him one more push before sprinting toward the kitchen.

The aroma of mutton fills the air, and my mouth waters. I can hardly contain myself as I wait for Daddy to finish cooking while Ahaan starts preparing kheer. It's such a joy to see both the men in my life cooking while we ladies indulge in some gossip.

I wander over to Maa, who beams at me. "Oh dear, come here!" she says, placing a kiss on my cheek. I instinctively wipe it off, and she playfully slaps her forehead. "You haven't changed since childhood!" We share a laugh just as Ahaan walks out with the food. I help him arrange the crockery, making sure it's all picture-perfect for a snap—because, of course, social media needs to see this!

After capturing the moment, we dig into the food. "Can't believe it's been two weeks since you've been here. It doesn't feel like you're so far away," daddy says and I smile at him.

Maa sighs, "It's going to be so lonely when you two leave again." I can sense the emotions swirling.

"Oh Maa, don't worry! I'm going to buy a house next to Shahrukh Khan!" I announce, half-joking.

Ahaan bursts out laughing. "She's lost it," he says, and I roll my eyes.

"Oh come on, she might!" Maa chimes in, clearly on my side.

"That's such an impossible dream, Maa. You really think he's going to come over for tea just because you live next door?" Ahaan chuckles.

"Of course!" I reply.

"You and your fantasies," Ahaan teases, and I shoot him a mock glare.

"Shut up! I'll design him clothes!" I declare, fueled by my wild imagination.

"Yeah, right! You'll make him walk on your gown!" Ahaan cackles, and I can't help but laugh along, even as I shoot him a playful look.

In this moment, surrounded by laughter and love, I realize how much I want to stay home. I miss the warmth of being here, the easy camaraderie, and the feeling of being exactly where I belong.
