The labyrinth twisted ahead, each turn pulling them further into a darkness that felt less like an absence of light and more like a presence. Emily couldn't shake the chill that Vyctoris's words had left on her, an icy residue that clung to her thoughts, clouding her judgment. Vyctoris's ability to warp his form into unsettling shapes was familiar; she had experienced this sort of disturbing mimicry before with Malachi. But something about Vyctoris felt different. Malachi's transformations were taunts, crafted to intimidate and mock. Vyctoris, on the other hand, wielded his shapeshifting abilities with a strange elegance, his words laced with veiled threats and promises.
It unnerved her in a way that even Malachi hadn't managed, making her feel as though Vyctoris was digging into her mind, pulling at threads she hadn't even realized were there. She had faced shapeshifters before, but Vyctoris seemed to operate on a different level, a puzzle of shadows and intent that left her feeling both exposed and intrigued.
Kael walked silently beside her, his gaze set straight ahead but his jaw tight, tension radiating from him. He hadn't spoken much since the encounter, and Emily could sense his unease, the turmoil simmering beneath his stoic expression.
The corridor they walked down was narrower than before, the walls pressing in so close that Emily's shoulders brushed against the stone. Strange, flickering lights glowed in alcoves along the path—torches that seemed to burn with an otherworldly, blue-green flame. Their pale, cold light cast long shadows, distorting the walls and giving the illusion that faces lurked just beneath the stone's surface, watching them with hollow eyes.
"You're too quiet," Emily finally said, glancing at Kael.
He didn't look at her. "Just... thinking."
Emily hesitated. "About Vyctoris?"
"About trusting it," Kael replied, his tone grim. "We don't know what that thing really is, or what it wants. Whatever this 'key' it mentioned is, it's likely a trap."
"I know," Emily replied, though she couldn't completely silence the small voice inside her that whispered What if it isn't?
Kael seemed to sense her hesitation. "Emily, don't let it get in your head. Vyctoris is clever. It knows how to twist words, how to make you question your own thoughts. That's how creatures like it survive—they feed on doubt."
Emily looked away, studying the cold flames as they passed. "But what if it's telling the truth? What if there really is something in this labyrinth that can help us?"
Kael stopped, turning to face her. "At what cost? Vyctoris isn't doing this out of kindness. If it wants something, it's for its own gain."
Emily didn't answer. She knew he was right, but it was hard to shake the idea that there was something more at play here. The malevolence was an ancient, pervasive force, and the idea that Vyctoris might know how to defeat it—even partially—was hard to ignore. It was as if a door had been opened, revealing possibilities she hadn't dared to consider before.
As they continued down the twisting path, the corridor gradually opened up into a vast, circular chamber. The ceiling stretched high above, lost in shadows, and the floor was covered with intricate symbols carved deep into the stone. In the center of the chamber was an altar, its surface littered with remnants of strange, brittle-looking artifacts—broken vials, shattered bones, and old, faded scraps of parchment.
Emily approached cautiously, feeling the air grow colder with each step. The chamber seemed alive with a sense of foreboding, as though they had trespassed on a place that had been long forgotten, hidden for a reason.
Kael followed close behind, his hand resting on his weapon. "This place... it feels wrong."
Emily nodded, her gaze fixed on the altar. "Like something terrible happened here."
