Night had fallen over Dallas, allowing the moon and stars to set the tone for the rest of our time together. The clock was approaching midnight. We sat outside of the white house with the red door, appreciating the warmth of a September day in Texas. Other regions were cooling down. We were still stuck in Summer.
My arms were wrapped around a teddy bear that Kavion won for me, playing a game of ring toss. Silence engulfed the space between us, tension floating above our heads. I didn't want to take the walk back to Dutch's lonely mansion. Knowing he was probably out with his girls, I didn't look forward to a night of overthinking and feeling inadequate. The day had turned out to be fun, but my night was about to ruin everything.
"So what are you going to do for the rest of your night?" I broke the silence finally, unable to sit still in it for too much longer. "Prolly go home and chill before I go to bed" He responded coolly, slumped down in the driver's seat. His eyes were fixed straight ahead. Seemingly, Kavion was just staring off at nothing. "What time do you usually go to bed?"
"You ask a lot of questions huh?" Our eyes connected, his peering through me. "You wearing a wire?"
"A wire bra?" I asked cluelessly, unsure of what he was referring to. "No, I don't wear those. They hur-" His laughter was loud and boisterous. He couldn't stop himself from laughing on my account. "What's so funny?"
"You. You funny as fuck without even trying" He calmed down as I gazed out of the window in embarrassment. He had so many moments where he would just laugh or throw a callous remark at me. I hated that I was a softhearted person. I felt everything so strongly while others hardly felt anything at all.
"I don't have a set time when I go to sleep" He brought the conversation back around to the question. I acknowledged his answer with a nod, but refused to look his way. "Can I ask you something personal?" He grabbed my full attention, making me turn my head his way. "I guess"
"Were you abused as a kid?" His question took me by surprised. I thought he would ask me my favorite color or food. Bringing up childhood trauma did not cross my mind. "By your father?" He added. My fingers nervously squeezed the teddy bear then released it repeatedly like one would do a stress ball. "Why are you asking me this?" I tried to giggle it off, the best way I knew how. "It's just so random-"
