Alex settled into his favorite spot on the couch, the soft cushions molding around him as he picked up his controller. The familiar sounds of battle music and the vibrant graphics of his favorite online game, Battle Realm, filled his bedroom. He was connected to his friends, Mark and Lily, who were both playing from their homes, their voices crackling through the headset.

“Okay, team, ready up!” Mark’s enthusiastic voice came through, and Alex felt a thrill of excitement. They had been grinding through the game all week, trying to reach the elusive Gold League.

“Let’s crush these noobs!” Lily chimed in, her competitive spirit infectious.
, laughter, and the occasional Alex groan of defeat.

Alex grinned as they launched into the match. The game was set in a fantastical world where players fought to control territories. As they maneuvered their characters through lush forests and treacherous mountains, Alex focused on coordinating their strategies.

“Watch out for the ambush on the left!” he shouted, watching as Mark’s character narrowly dodged an enemy attack.

“I see it! Cover me!” Mark replied, rushing in with his character, a formidable warrior class with heavy armor.

Lily, playing a mage, unleashed a flurry of spells, sending colorful projectiles flying across the screen. “Take that!” she laughed, as a group of enemies disintegrated before them.

“Come on, Alex! You’re supposed to be the best player here!” Mark teased, his eyes narrowed in concentration.

“Yeah, the best at losing, apparently!” chimed in Lily, her voice sparkling with mischief.

Alex shot back, “Just wait until I pull off this combo! You’ll see!” He concentrated, and for a moment, the world outside faded away. It was just him, his friends, and the thrill of the game.

The match was filled with friendly banter and playful teasing, each player pushing the others to perform better. When Alex miscalculated a jump and his character fell into a pit, Mark burst out laughing. “You had one job, Alex!”

“Shut up! I was distracted by your terrible strategy,” Alex shot back, trying to hide his smile.

After yet another heated round that ended with Alex throwing his controller in frustration, the group collapsed into a rhythm of banter, tossing jabs and laughing at each other’s expense. As the evening wore on, their conversation turned toward the upcoming school year and the new program pairing students from Eastview High with those from their school.

“I heard your partner is some genius who built a thermal energy generator or something,” Mark remarked, a teasing lilt in his voice.

“Yeah, I heard that too,” Lily added. “What’s his name again? Miles something?”

“Right! Miles Thompson! I haven’t even met him yet,” Alex replied, shrugging it off. But a knot of curiosity formed in his stomach. What kind of genius would he be paired with?

Later that night, with his friends gone and the house quiet, Alex found himself scrolling through social media, a bored habit that often led him down rabbit holes. His mind wandered back to his new partner. He leaned back in his chair, an idea sparking in his head. A little research wouldn’t hurt, right?

He typed “Miles Thompson” into the search bar, heart racing slightly with anticipation. The profile that popped up was filled with photos of Miles in everyday life: hanging out with friends, attending school events, and showcasing his impressive ice hockey skills.Alex leaned in closer, intrigued. This was the guy from the announcement day—the one whose help he had turned down. He was the kid everyone looked up to for a reason, and Alex was just now beginning to understand why.As Alex scrolled, he couldn’t help but notice how confident and outgoing Miles appeared—everything he wasn’t.

Then he stumbled upon a post that made him pause: a photo from two years ago at a science fair, proudly displaying Miles standing beside his project—a thermal energy generator. The caption spoke of how Miles had used the competition winnings to implement the generator in his neighborhood, helping families save on electric bills. Impressive.

Curiosity morphed into obsession as he dug deeper. He found himself scrolling all the way back through Miles’s timeline, entranced by the snapshots of a life that felt so different from his own. But as he reached the beginning, he accidentally tapped the “like” button on an old post. Panic surged through him. No! He quickly unliked it, heart pounding as if he’d just committed a crime.

He tossed his phone onto the bed and tried to shake off the embarrassment, but sleep eluded him. Thirty minutes later, just as he was about to drift off, his phone buzzed beside him. A follow request from Miles Thompson?

Alex sat up, a mix of excitement and dread washing over him. Does he know I was stalking him? His heart raced.

He accepted the request immediately, his pulse quickening. Just a few minutes later, a notification popped up: a DM from Miles.

“So, you a fan?” it read.

Alex couldn’t help but smirk. Something about the sudden attention it ignited his cheeky spirit.

You wish,” he typed back, a playful glint in his eye.

A moment later, Miles replied: “So you’re just a plain stalker then?”

Alex laughed aloud, shaking his head. “Not quite, just gauging my partner.”

Miles’s response was quick: **“Partner? Huh, I thought for sure you’d try to get a new one.”

“Nope, I think I’ll stick with this one for the year,” Alex shot back, feeling a rush of boldness. He didn’t quite know where this newfound energy was coming from, but he liked it.

Miles didn’t respond after that, letting the silence hang in the air. Alex found himself reflecting on the conversation they’d just had, surprised at how easy it felt to talk to his assigned partner. There was something refreshing about the banter which felt different to when his doing it with his friends or Alexa, there was a casual rhythm to their exchange that he hadn’t expected.

He remembered the awkwardness of their first meeting at the school announcement, where he’d brushed Miles off, assuming they’d have nothing in common. But now, with the playful teasing and the unexpected rapport, he realized that he didn’t mind this dynamic at all. The conversation was flowing effortlessly, and he found himself smiling at his phone, feeling an unfamiliar warmth spread through him.

It was a stark contrast to how he thought things would go. He’d imagined that interacting with him would be uncomfortable, filled with stilted silence and forced pleasantries. Instead, he felt a genuine connection beginning to form. It was strange, yet exciting. The initial tension had dissipated, replaced by a sense of camaraderie that left him curious to see where this would lead.

With a grin creeping across his face, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that this might be the beginning of something unexpected and like everyone around him maybe he should give this change a chance—a chance to see how it unfolded.
