⸻ SEPTEMBER, 1976 // hogwarts, scotland
"If I got paired up with James Potter for anything I think I'd retire from life." Manya wrapped her fingers around the salt shaker, sprinkling it onto her dissected pie. "Actually, any of them really. Potter's attention span is non-existent, Lupin's unbearably quiet, Black's presence alone is just annoying and Pettigrew, well, he makes like some strange squeaking noises sometimes."
Harriet raised her brows at the red-haired girl, before shaking her head dismissively.
It was almost unbearable for her to think about the rest of her day. Willingly spending time with a strange excuse of a boy had not been her preference, but she had no desire to fail her very first assignment. The amount of nonsense that comes out of James Potter had always contorted itself into irrelevant background noise whenever he had opened his mouth.
Lia Sundrop — a classmate of theirs — was seated across the two of them on the stretched out table, sketching out a drawing that would grow more questionable from each time Harriet took a peek. "Seems like you just cannot escape him," she inserted. "Soon enough, you'll have his face pop up into your dreams." Harriet's face scrunched up in disgust just from the thought of it.
"That's not a dream love, that's a nightmare," Manya retorted. The way she had used a spoon to scoop out the inside of her pie had been strange to both Harriet and Lia — but they disregarded it. "I suppose divination's a lot better circumstance than potions. The lot of 'em managed to blow up the classroom last year, Slughorn was not pleased."
Although majority of Lia's attention focused on her drawing, she chimed in occasionally. "Yep. I had no eyebrows for a month." Her brows twisted in confusion before returning to normal. "Should have castrated them lot when I had the chance."
A sharp exhale came from Manya before she spoke again. "That's their charm if you haven't noticed." She placed her spoon down gently and added, "That, and their tendency to be absolute twats. I do not understand why Alice and Mary are such good friends with them. I lose any desire to live just being in their presence." Harriet couldn't help but respond with a light scoff.
"Glad I'm not the only one who finds them intolerable," she agreed. "I could barely stand working with James for half an hour in class last week. It felt like I was babysitting some overgrown toddler."
"He is an overgrown toddler," Lia added. She smiled brightly as she held her drawing up, displaying it to the two girls across from her. "What do we think?"
Harriet nodded slowly. "It's... nice..." she mumbled.
"It's definitely a drawing," Manya added.
