"LIZZY! Are you done yet?" CC cried, bouncing restlessly on the balls of his feet, causing his headband to slip onto the floor.
"Give me a few seconds." his sister replied from within their shared bedroom.
"Come on! It's been ages! We have to go Trick-or-Treating soon!"
"Go bother Michael instead. He isn't ready yet either."
Despite the usual deadpan tone never leaving her voice, CC could sense Elizabeth's annoyance. At that very moment, Michael moonwalked into the living room in a white t-shirt, black pants, a black leather jacket, a pair of black loafers and a black hat. It wasn't hard to guess who he was dressed as.
"Mikey," CC said, picking his headband off the floor. "Do you know a 'Billie Jean'?"
Mike gave him an amused grin. "Yeah. But she's not my lover."
Finally, the bedroom door creaked open, and out stepped Elizabeth.
She wore a long, white, vintage dress with a pretty little bow tied around her waist. Her ginger hair had been tied into two long braids, and bangs hung over her forehead. She would've looked absolutely adorable if it weren't for her makeup. Every fold in her skin had been heavily exaggerated, and thick, dark eyeliner made her eyes look horrifyingly large.
"Miss me?" Elizabeth asked her brothers, with monotone innocence.
Michael looked stunned. "Y'know, when you said you were dressing up as 'Anna', I thought you meant the Disney character..."
"I said 'Annabelle', Dummy."
"Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe."
"KIDS!" came Victoria's call. "Are you all ready?"
"YES!" they all responded.
Victoria entered the room from the kitchen. She wore a beautiful, sparkly blue frock, with frilly netted sleeves. Her hair was tied up into a bun and supported by a blue headband.
"Aww, the three of you look so adorable!" she exclaimed with a wide smile.
CC smiled back.
"Mum..." Mike started, in a low but emphatic voice. "I'm, like, in my mid-twenties. I think I passed 'adorable' twenty years ago."
"Don't be silly, Mr Jackson. You'll always be adorable to me," said Victoria, pinching Michael's cheeks.
"H-Hey! Cut it out!" he said, softly but firmly pushing her away, looking fairly flustered. Victoria laughed.
"In all seriousness, though, you look very beautiful, Mum." Mike said.
"Thank you, Michael."
"I think Mummy's the best Cinderella in the world!" CC exclaimed, rushing up to his mother and giving her a tight hug.
Victoria ruffled his hair, careful not to knock his headband off, and kissed his forehead. "Thank you, sweetie. And you make the most adorable kitten!"
CC beamed at her, pulling his black sleeves down over his wrists and readjusting his cat-ear headband.
"Where's Father?"Victoria started, "Oh, he's taking a while to--"
"I'M NOT GOING!" came a call from downstairs.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN? OF COURSE YOU ARE!" Victoria yelled back, turning towards the stairs to the basement.
"NO I'M NOT!"
"Mum, if he doesn't want to come, let's just go without him," Michael suggested, a hopeful note in his voice.
