Part I
The Beginning Of The End
"I still don't see why we have to do this." Eva said as she and her best friend, Ace, stood outside in the middle of December, practically freezing to death fora school project.
"Well, we have to study the constellations. Remember? See, there's Orion over there." Ace pointed upwards at a blob of stars in the sky while looking through the telescope planted in Ace's backyard.
"See those three in a line right there?"
No. "Yeah, what about them?"
"That's Orion's belt. They're always on the left side of my back yard in the winter."
"How do you even know that?" Still squinting at the blobs in the sky, Eva wondered out loud. She had never paid much attention in science.
"Well, if you had spent less time drawing in class, maybe you would have known that we spent the whole 90 minute block talking about constellations."
"Oh, shut up," she said as she smacked the tall, awkward boy's arm. He mocked hurt and rubbed his obviously not hurt arm. He picked up the assignment sheet and started reading it out loud.
Eva ignored the instructions and looked into the telescope. She had absolutely no idea what she was staring at, but still thought it was pretty anyway. Then, all of a sudden, a blazing thing, almost like a comet came tearing through the sky. She made a sound of surprise and jumped back, knocking over the telescope and her laptop in the process.
Immediately, Ace ran to her aid. "Whoa," Ace reacted as Eva landed on the ground, "are you alright?"
"Did you see that?" She saw a that look of concern was plastered on his face. "See what?'
"The comet thingy! Please tell me you saw it. The huge flash? No?"
"Maybe you should go lay down on my couch for as while. I'm sure your mom wouldn't mind. It's a Saturday, I could just call your house and tell her-"
"I'm not crazy," Eva whispered, cutting him off from his nervous rant, "I know what I saw." He helped her up and Eva, still shaken up by what she had seen, brushed the dirt and grass off her clothes. She ran over, picked up the telescope, and pushed her eye to the lens, desperate to get a glimpse of what she saw before. It's hopeless. I'm crazy. "Maybe I didn't see anything," she said and allowed him to guide her to his house like some mental patient. Just as they reached the sliding back door, a crash came from the woods behind them. Eva turned, breaking free from Ace's grip, and dashed into the trees despite Ace calling for her and telling her not to go.The sound of him swearing was cut off the pounding of footsteps behind her.
The scene they come upon is something out of a movie. Trees surrounding the impact sight were lit up with flames. What rose out of the flames, was what had surprised Eva. In the center of the blaze was a boy. A teenager. He was crumpled on the ground, sobbing. Then, she noticed his black feathered wings around him.
Eva watched the boy lay on the ground, his shoulders wracking with sobs. She took a step foreword, and felt Ace grab her arm to hold her back. "Eva what are you doing? There's nothing here." Obviously he didn't see what she was seeing. She took another step forward. She reached her hand out, and the boy's head snapped up. Eva recoiled and stepped back. Just as the boy rose up, a dark figure emerged from the trees next to them. He, or what Eva assumed to be a he, ran over to the fire and yelled, "over here, Angel Boy!" The boy in the flames turned from Eva, and relief momentarily swept through her.
