"Liam! Liam stop!" Luke heard Niall cry out, his head clouded to where it was almost muffled in a way.
"No! He needs to learn to obey me! I don't care if he has to get close to death before he learns; HE IS GOING TO LEARN!" Liam demanded, not even glancing back at Niall, who was desperately trying to pull him off of the flamboyant boy.
Niall backed up, running out of the room as he mumbled, "That's it, I'm calling the police."
And that was the last thing Luke remembered aside from the constant beatings before he blacked out.
•••••
"Luke? Luke, honey, are you awake?" He heard a very familiar voice say from next to him.
He grunted, squeezing his eyes before trying to open them fully, for the brightness around him was too much at first. Once his eyes were adjusted he took the chance to take in his surroundings.
He was in a hospital room: he discovered.
He turned to his right, surprising to see his teary-eyed mother staring at him, a soft smile on her lips.
"M-Mum," he croaked, his throat dry.
"I'm here now. Mummy's here now," she whispered, grabbing his hand and kissing the back.
"B-But what h-happened?" He questioned, confused as to why he was here. One minute he was on the floor beneath Liam; the next he was laying in a hospital bed feeling weaker than ever.
"Niall called the police and they had an ambulance take you here. Last time I heard they were taking Liam to court," she explained softly, giving his hand a squeeze.
He shivered at the name, and not a good shiver.
She shed another single tear. "I thought I lost you Luke, I really did. We were looking for you for so long. Every minute was dedicated to finding you. And when they called us and told us you were here in this condition, our hearts shattered. We were so scared."
"We? U-Us? Our? You m-mean you and Michael?" He inquired.
"Yes, and Calum and Ashton. Especially Calum, though," she told him, thinking how torn the prince was with his feelings.
Luke frowned at the mention of the name.
"Please listen to me, Luke," she insisted, pleading into his eyes. "I know you hate that he never told you, but he did it to protect you. He thinks that it made you run away and that's what's causing all of this. He only did it to ensure that you were getting all of the love that you deserved."
"B-But how can I trust him now?" Luke asked, starting to come to terms that maybe it was for the best.
"Sweetie," she sighed, "Calum is not like Liam. I can tell how strongly he feels for you. I can tell that he never meant to hurt you. He was truly trying and just got caught up in the difficulty of it all. Liam was problematic before; why did you go back to him? You knew it was only trouble."
He was silent. He knew why. He knew exactly why. He just hated to say it aloud. Especially to someone who he cared for and cared for him.
But he said it.
"I-I guess I thought that's what I deserved," Luke admitted for the first time.
"Oh, honey," she started, the tears coming down again. "He hurt you so badly, this time and last time, and you don't deserve that. No-one does."
