The morning sun crept through the gauzy curtains, casting a warm glow across the small room. Ava stirred, stretching her arms over her head, the events of last night still fresh in her mind. She and Ethan had shared their first kiss, a gentle, sweet moment by the beach that had finally allowed them to acknowledge what they had both been holding back for so long.

But now, in the daylight, the memories brought both excitement and a wave of nervousness. She glanced over at Ethan, who was still sound asleep in the bed across from hers, his hair tousled, breathing steady and relaxed. A small smile crept onto her face as she watched him; in sleep, he looked peaceful, almost vulnerable—so different from his usual confident self.

Still, the thrill of last night's kiss was tempered by a nagging question: What happened now? Would everything change, or would they go back to the safety of their friendship?

Before she could dwell on it further, Ethan stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He stretched and looked over at her, a sleepy grin spreading across his face.

"Morning," he murmured, his voice still thick with sleep.

"Morning," she replied, feeling her cheeks warm as she remembered their kiss. "Sleep well?"

"Like a rock," he replied, sitting up. He ran a hand through his hair, glancing at her with a sheepish smile. "Guess I was more exhausted than I thought."

They shared a soft laugh, and for a moment, everything felt normal—like any other morning after one of their beach trips. But then their eyes met, and the memory of their kiss flickered between them, creating a quiet, charged tension.

"So...about last night," Ava began, her voice hesitant.

Ethan's expression softened, and he nodded, as if he'd been thinking the same thing. "Yeah. Last night."

They both fell silent, unsure of how to proceed, each searching for the right words. Finally, Ethan spoke, his voice gentle.

"Look, Ava...last night was...well, it was amazing. But I don't want you to feel pressured or rushed into anything. I know this is new territory for us, and if you need time, I'm okay with that."

Ava felt a rush of gratitude, his words easing some of the anxiety that had been building. This was Ethan, after all—the same caring, patient person she'd always known. She nodded, smiling softly.

"Thank you, Ethan. I guess I just...need to figure out what all of this means. But I don't regret it," she added quickly, meeting his gaze with sincerity. "Not one bit."

He smiled, visibly relieved. "Good. Because neither do I."

They spent the rest of the morning lounging in their room, talking about everything and nothing, falling back into the familiar rhythm of their friendship, only this time, with an added layer of vulnerability. After checking out of the inn, they spent a few more hours exploring the beach town, sharing stories, and laughing over memories from past trips. By the time they started the drive back, Ava felt a deep sense of contentment, as if she were exactly where she was meant to be.

Back in the City

A few days later, life returned to its usual hectic pace. Ava was back to juggling photography assignments and client meetings, while Ethan threw himself into work at the restaurant, preparing for a busy season of events. They managed to keep in touch through quick texts and brief calls, but their usual coffee meetups had been put on hold due to their busy schedules.
