The next morning, Ava felt as if she were walking on air. Last night, she and Ethan had finally crossed the line from friends to something more. She had spent years guarding her heart, convinced that keeping Ethan at arm's length was the only way to protect herself. But now, that wall was gone, and with it, all the tension and uncertainty she'd carried for so long.
Ethan had texted her early that morning, suggesting they make their first date official—a night out, just the two of them. Ava smiled at her phone, the thrill of that word, "date," making her heart skip. This wasn't just another one of their weekly coffee meetups or spontaneous hangouts; it was something new, a step toward something she'd dreamed of but had never dared to hope for.
She spent the day busily working, the minutes dragging by with an unusual slowness. By the time evening arrived, Ava was practically buzzing with anticipation. She stood in front of her mirror, feeling an odd but wonderful nervousness as she adjusted her dress—a simple but elegant choice in a soft blue that Ethan had once complimented her on.
The doorbell rang, and she felt a flutter of excitement as she opened the door to find Ethan standing there, holding a single white rose, his smile warm and slightly shy.
"For you," he said, handing her the flower.
Ava took it, feeling her cheeks warm. "Thank you, Ethan. It's beautiful."
"You look...amazing," he murmured, his gaze lingering on her. "Ready to go?"
She nodded, slipping her hand into his as they headed down the stairs. She felt a thrill at the casual intimacy of the gesture, the way his fingers intertwined with hers. It was such a simple thing, holding hands, yet it filled her with a quiet, comforting joy.
The Restaurant
Ethan had chosen a cozy rooftop restaurant with a stunning view of the city skyline. The dim lighting and soft, ambient music set the perfect atmosphere, and Ava felt her heart flutter as they were seated at a small, candle-lit table. She glanced around, taking in the sight of the city lights stretching out before them, the soft murmur of voices blending with the distant sound of live jazz music.
"This place is beautiful," she said, her gaze meeting his. "I didn't even know it existed."
"I thought it'd be a good spot for us," Ethan replied, his smile a bit shy. "Someplace special."
They settled in, and as they started with a round of appetizers, Ava felt herself relax. The conversation flowed easily, familiar yet filled with the thrill of something new. They talked about their favorite memories, old dreams, and embarrassing moments, laughing over stories they'd heard a hundred times before but which somehow felt brand new in this setting.
"Do you remember that time in high school," Ethan said, grinning as he took a sip of his wine, "when you talked me into sneaking into the art room after hours so you could finish that sculpture?"
Ava laughed, nodding. "And we almost got caught by Mr. Hargrove! He had to have known it was us, but he just let us go."
Ethan chuckled, shaking his head. "I was convinced we were going to get expelled. But you just walked out of there like you didn't have a care in the world."
"Well, I had to finish that project," Ava said, her smile widening. "Besides, I had my loyal accomplice by my side."
Ethan's face softened, his gaze lingering on her. "I'd follow you anywhere, Ava. You know that."
Her heart skipped a beat, and she looked down, feeling a blush rise to her cheeks. They had shared so many moments like this over the years, but tonight, every word, every glance, held a weight that made her pulse quicken.
