chapter one - "young dumb and broke"

...

"That's what, a three storey fall to the deck?" Pope queried, with a chuckle, "I give you about a one in three chance of survival."

John B was recklessly balancing on one foot on the edge of a roof, which what's currently under construction. Normally, Ellie was one for a bit of fun, but for now she watched him, unamused.

"Don't go dying on me, Booker," Ellie told her twin sternly, crossing her arms, squinting through the blinding sun, carefully watching the figure of her brother.

"Should I do it?" John B asked.

"Yeah jump," Pope urged, holding an abandoned screw driver and pointing it as if it were a gun, "I'll shoot you on the way down."

"Don't encourage him Pope," Ellie hissed, smacking Pope on the chest, to which he playfully slung his arm over her shoulder.

"He'll be fine," Pope reassured, although Ellie wrinkled her nose in distain.

"You'll shoot me?" John B asked.

"Yep," Pope teased, "Pow!"

"They're going to have Japanese toilets with towel warmers," Kiara grumbled, emerging from the house.

"Of course they would. But you should know I can't have cold towels," JJ piped up.

"This used to be turtle habitat," Kiara recalled, "But who cares about the turtles I guess."

"Hey Ellie," JJ called to the dark haired girl.

"Hey," she said, turning to look up to the boy who was lounging on the scaffolding.

"One day, we'll have a house together with Japanese toilets and towel warmers," he told her, as if he were certain, "Full kook style."

"Oh really," Ellie smiled, sipping her cool beer, "And where will this house be?"

"Far from here," JJ replied, frowning in thought, "Hawaii?"

"Perhaps England?" Ellie suggested, while attempting an English accent, which failed miserably.

"That was awful," Kiara laughed, in her own English accent which was arguably mush better than the previous.

"Show off," Ellie muttered, jokingly rolling her eyes at the brunette.

"No way," JJ shook his head vigorously, leaning back into the railing, "Those pigeons totally freak me out."

"Definitely not England," Ellie nodded understandingly although a grin made its way to her lips.

"Dude, really?" John B joked, chugging his own beer from atop the roof, "And I'm not sure how I feel about you living with my little sister."

"I'm literally two minutes older than you," Ellie retorted.
