Standing in the kitchen, Estella's eyebrows knitted together in confusion as she surveyed the counter in front of her. Her gaze shifted between the recipe card and the scattered ingredients, her hands hovering uncertainly over a chunk of meat. She bit her lip, hesitating for a moment, then picked up her phone and dialed a number.

"Hello?" her friend, Sophia Maria answered almost instantly.

"I don't know how I should baste the steak . . ." she admitted sheepishly, her tone laced with embarrassment.

"It's five in the morning for Christ's sake." The voice on the other end of the line exasperatedly breathed out, "Why're you basting a steak?"

"That's because . . ." Estella drifted off, pausing to think what to say.

"Because?"

"Because, Carlos is coming home for dinner and I don't know what to make. I can't make pasta or any fancy shit cause, well, you know, I am not a very good cook. I thought making steak would be the easiest thing since all you gotta do is put in oil." She murmured, hoping not to hear an earful from her best friend

The model sighed, this time it was out of hopelessness and somewhat pity, "You know you're not as dumb as you look—" Sophia paused, "You're way dumber! Who the hell thinks making steak is the easiest? You should've gone for pasta or making instant ramen because those are the only things you do not screw up."

"Hey I make good boiled veggies, mashed potatoes and baby food." Estella defended herself.

"Stell, look, making steak is something you perfect over time. You can't just—" Sophia sighed for the umpteenth time, "You know what you should do, cut the meat up add a few veggies that are easy to stir fry and have it with browned rice."

"Nice idea."

With newfound motivation, Estella started working on the dinner as her daughter napped.

It was 4 p.m. The entire house basked in silence when the sound of the doorbell pierced through Estella's ears. She had just finished preparing dinner. Was it Carlos?
