Lily sat in the coffee shop, watching Evan across the table. He was the same Evan she'd grown up with—same tousled dark hair, same piercing green eyes—but something about him was different lately, almost... dangerous. It wasn't in his appearance but rather in the way he held himself like he was carrying the weight of a shadow, she couldn't see.

"Are you even listening?" he asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Yeah, yeah, of course," she lied, her voice a bit too quick, her cheeks flushing under his gaze. She'd never been great at lying, but with Evan, it was impossible. He raised an eyebrow, but his expression softened.

"You're staring," he teased, smirking.

"Only because you're acting strange." She tried to brush it off, leaning back in her chair, and crossing her arms. But the playful tension between them was quickly overshadowed by something darker as he glanced out the window, his jaw tightening.

"Lily," he said quietly, "maybe you should keep some distance... for a while."

Her heart skipped a beat. Evan had never said anything like this before. They'd been best friends since elementary school, always together, never needing anyone else. He was her confidant, her strength, the one who knew her better than anyone else. Distance had never been an option.

"Why?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

He looked at her, his eyes filled with a hint of something she couldn't quite place—fear? Sadness? For a second, she thought he might reach out and take her hand, but he didn't. Instead, he took a deep breath and spoke so quietly that she had to lean in to hear.

"Things aren't... safe right now," he said, his words heavy with a weight that made her shiver.

She opened her mouth to argue, to demand answers, but he stood up suddenly, his chair scraping against the floor. She reached out, her fingers brushing against his hand, and he paused, his gaze softening for a brief, flickering moment.

"Evan," she whispered, "what's going on?"

But before he could answer, his phone buzzed. His eyes darkened, and he glanced at the screen, his expression tightening once more. He gave her one last look, a silent apology lingering in his eyes, before he turned and walked out of the coffee shop, leaving her alone with a hollow feeling in her chest.

As she sat there, watching him disappear into the rain-soaked street, her mind raced with questions. She knew Evan was hiding something, something serious. And even though she knew better, a part of her could not help but be drawn to the mystery, to the darkness he was hiding.

Outside, the rain poured down in sheets, washing over the empty streets. She could still see Evan's figure fading into the mist like a ghost slipping back into the shadows.

For a moment, Lily considered letting him go, leaving the unanswered questions behind and moving on. But as she watched him disappear, she knew that wasn't an option. Not for her. Not for them.

Whatever Evan was hiding, she was going to find out. Even if it meant stepping into the shadows with him.
