The night air was thick as Evan led Lily down the quiet streets, past the well-lit neighborhoods and into an abandoned part of town she barely recognized. He was silent, his face a mask of concentration, as if steeling himself for what he was about to reveal. Lily's hand tightened around his, trying to steady the flutter of nerves in her stomach.
They reached an old, decrepit building covered in vines, the paint peeling from its weathered walls. Evan pushed open the rusted door, and they stepped inside. The air was heavy with dust, and the dim light cast eerie shadows across the walls. He finally stopped, leaning against a wall, and let out a long, shaky breath.
"This place... it's where I come when I need to think," he murmured. "Where I come to remember."
Lily's heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. She had never seen Evan like this, so guarded and haunted. She took a cautious step closer, her eyes searching his face.
"Remember what?" she asked softly.
Evan looked away, his jaw clenched, as if the words were caught in his throat. Finally, he spoke, his voice low and rough. "My family wasn't what you think. It wasn't just me and my mom... There was my dad, too. He was a part of... something dark. Something I was dragged into after he died."
Lily's breath caught. She had always known Evan's father had died when he was young, but she had never pressed him for details. Now, she realized there was a whole side to him she hadn't known—parts of him that had been hidden in shadows.
"When he died, his debts fell on me," Evan continued, his voice bitter. "These people... they didn't care that I was just a kid. They said I had to pay his price, that I had to do things to make up for his mistakes."
Her heart broke at the anger and pain in his words. She couldn't imagine the weight of it, the way it must have crushed him to carry a burden like that alone. Without thinking, she reached out, touching his arm gently.
"I'm so sorry, Evan," she whispered. "I never knew."
He looked at her then, his gaze intense, filled with a mix of regret and something else—something that made her pulse quicken. "I didn't want you to know. I wanted to keep you away from this, from all of it."
She shook her head, refusing to let him shut her out. "You don't have to carry this alone anymore. I'm here, Evan. I'll help you, whatever it takes."
A flicker of vulnerability crossed his face, and for a moment, he looked like the boy she had grown up with—the one who used to laugh with her, who made her feel safe. But then he reached up, gently brushing a tear from her cheek, his hand lingering on her face.
"You don't understand, Lily," he said softly, his voice filled with a dark edge. "Being around me... it's dangerous. You could get hurt."
She held his gaze, her heart pounding. "Then let me take the risk. I don't care, Evan. I don't want you to face this alone."
His hand slid to the back of her neck, and before she could think, he was pulling her closer. Her heart raced as their faces were inches apart, his breath warm against her skin. She could feel the intensity between them, the unspoken connection that had been building for years. She thought he might kiss her, and a part of her wanted him to, more than anything.
But at the last second, he pulled back, his expression conflicted. "I can't," he murmured, releasing her. "Not with you. I can't let you fall into this darkness."
Lily felt a pang of disappointment, but she forced herself to stay strong. "It's too late," she whispered. "I'm already in, Evan. And I'm not going anywhere."
He looked at her for a long moment, and she saw the war in his eyes, the battle between wanting her close and keeping her safe. Finally, he nodded, his jaw set.
"All right," he said, his voice resigned. "But if you're staying, then you need to be prepared for what's coming."
They stood in the shadows together, and Lily felt a strange sense of certainty settle over her. Whatever was coming, she would face it with him
