Chapter 13

The next morning, Amudha bundled up the golden retriever in a cozy blanket and set off to meet Arul at the vet hospital. The puppy, though still small, was surprisingly full of energy, wriggling in her arms as he tried to take in all the new sights and sounds around him.

When she arrived at the vet, Arul was already waiting outside, leaning against his car. His face broke into a warm smile as he spotted her and the little bundle in her arms.

“There he is! The newest member of the family,” Arul greeted, gently scratching behind the puppy’s ears. The retriever yelped in excitement, clearly as thrilled as his new human parents.

They stepped into the vet hospital, where a nurse guided them to an examination room. While they waited for the vet, Arul turned to Amudha. “So, any ideas on a name for him?”

Amudha shook her head, her expression thoughtful. “I wanted to wait until we were both here to decide. He’s as much yours as he is mine.”

Arul’s eyes softened at her words. They tossed around a few names, each suggestion getting either a nod of approval or a playful scrunch of the nose.

“How about Milo?” Arul suggested finally.

The puppy tilted his head, as if reacting to the name. Amudha laughed, delighted by the sound of it. “Milo… I like it. He looks like a Milo, don’t you think?”

Arul nodded in agreement, reaching down to pat the puppy. “Alright, Milo it is.”

Just then, the vet came in and gave Milo a thorough checkup. He praised the puppy’s health, then gave them a list of vaccinations and a few tips on caring for their new companion. With a clean bill of health, Milo was officially ready to start his new life.

As they walked out of the clinic, Arul surprised Amudha by pulling a small box out of his coat pocket. She looked at him curiously, and he handed it to her with a smile.

“What’s this?” she asked, accepting the box.

“Just a little something I thought would be perfect for him,” Arul said, a hint of shyness in his voice.

Amudha opened the box to find a tiny, silver name tag engraved with “Milo” in elegant letters. Her heart melted as she held it up. “This is… so thoughtful, Arul. Thank you.”

Arul helped fasten the tag onto Milo’s collar. “Now he’s officially ours,” he said softly, meeting her gaze with a smile.

They both decided to grab a coffee nearby, so they walked to a cozy little café with Milo happily trotting beside them. The place was warm and inviting, the scent of freshly brewed coffee and pastries filling the air as they found a spot by the window.

As they waited for their drinks, Amudha glanced at Arul. “You know, I never imagined having a dog, but now… it feels right.”

Arul smiled, nodding. “I think he’s going to bring a lot of joy into both of our lives.” He paused for a moment, his expression softening. “And you too, Amudha. I didn’t expect to feel this comfortable around someone again.”

Amudha looked down, touched by his words. “I know what you mean. I’ve been holding on to so much from the past, but having you and Milo… it’s like a fresh start.”

They sipped their coffee, sharing stories about their lives, dreams, and, of course, their new journey with Milo. As the conversation flowed naturally, they both felt a warmth that went beyond the coffee. It was a gentle reassurance that maybe, despite all the baggage they carried, they could build something beautiful together.

After their coffee, they took Milo for a short walk around the park near the café. They laughed as he ran around, sniffing everything and playfully tugging on the fallen leaves. Watching him, Arul and Amudha exchanged a smile, knowing they were already a team, bound by the little golden retriever who had brought them together.

As the sun began to set, they reluctantly headed back, but the evening had left its mark. In that short time, they had become more than just two people trying to move on from their pasts. They were Milo’s parents, bound together by the joyful journey they were beginning to share.
