leaves crunched beneath the soles of his sneakers, as seungmin ambled— his hands sunk deep within the pockets of his coat along a tree-lined path. early autumn had bitten the air with that crisp, refreshing bite. seungmin took in great breaths of the light scent of pine and the earthy undertones of fallen leaves. the world was bathed in shades of amber and gold and rust.
at his side, jeongin was struggling with the lid of a steaming cup of coffee. his lips pursed tightly in concentration, his cheeks lightly pink from the chill in the air. finally, with an exasperated huff, he muttered, "why are coffee lids so complicated? It's like they were designed to spill on you."
seungmin chuckled, reaching over to help. "you're just cursed when it comes to coffee drinks."
jeongin gave him a playful glare but let him take the cup. seungmin fit the lid onto it with ease and then handed it back. jeongin muttered out a "thanks" and had a tentative sip, exhaling happily as the warmth seeped through him.
they had only met a few months prior from one of their university classes, and seungmin was organized, quiet, and had this unassuming confidence about him that jeongin found fascinating. ad much as seungmin had been calculated and planned, jeongin was spontaneous, bursting with this energetic fervor-the kind of person who would drag one on spur-of-the-moment adventures and ache one's stomach from laughter. they balanced each other, somehow, in a really organic way-like two matching puzzle pieces.
"so..." seungmin said, nudging jeongin to continue down the path, "are we ever going to talk about why you dragged me out here at sunrise?"
jeongin grinned, an impish sparkle dancing in his eye. "who said I dragged you? you followed willingly."
"under protest," seungmin corrected, but a smile tugged at his lips. "i just really didn't see the point in being awake at this hour on a saturday."
jeongin comes to a full stop, turning back to him. "the sunrises are pretty, seungmin. you can't tell me this wasn't worth it."
seungmin looked around him at the early morning sun filtering between the trees, casting golden light across the grass. the long shadows stretched, bathing everything in the soft, warm hue as the world yet woke. there was something almost magical to it.
"alright, I'll admit it's... nice," he said, almost seemingly against his will.
"nice?" jeongin looked at him in mock offense.
"this is gorgeous. its like the world put on its best outfit just for us."
seungmin rolled his eyes, but he couldn't hide the way the corners of his mouth quirked upwards.
"fine. It's beautiful."
they walked on, drifting into an easy silence. as this time of day, the park was almost deserted, except for early-morning joggers and the occasional dog walker. seungmin noticed jeongin kept casting him sideways glances, he seemed to be waiting for exactly the right moment to say something.
🍁🤎🖤🍁
"is there something on your mind?" seungmin asked finally, breaking the silence.
jeongin started, his face splotching into a faint pink. "what? oh, no. nothing. well... actually, yeah." he rubbed the back of his neck, looking anywhere but at seungmin. "I just... I kind of wanted to thank you."
seungmin raised an eyebrow. "for what?"
"for putting up with me," jeongin said sheepishly. "I know I'm kind of all over the place, and I probably annoy you sometimes. but... you've always been so patient with me. I appreciate it."
seungmins expression softened. "you don't annoy me, jeongin... well, maybe a little." he added with a teasing smile. "but that's part of your charm."
jeongin laughed-the sound was light, infectious. "youre just saying that."
"I'm serious." seungmin said nothing more, his eyes piercing as he stared at him. "you make life. interesting. I don't think I realised how much I needed that until I met you.".
the scowl on jeongins face softened, and for a while, none of them spoke. they stood silent amidst the quiet beauty of the park, each of them lost to his own thoughts. finally, jeongin reached out, hesitantly, and took seungmins hand in his.
seungmins eyes widen slightly, but he makes no move to pull away. instead, he tightens his grip-subtle, yet perfectly clear reassurance.
"I'm glad we're friends, seungmin," jeongin said softly.
"me too," seungmin said softly.
and they walked hand in hand, comfortable in the silence of their surroundings, further and further down until they came across a small pond. a family of ducks moved effortlessly across the water. above them, colors reflected off the water's surface into the sky like a shimmering pastel canvas almost too beautiful to be real.
"lets sit for a while," jeongin said, nodding toward a bench. they sat down, seungmin releasing jeongin hand reluctantly as he wriggled his coat. they sat in comfortable silence, watching the ducks and ripples in the water.
after a while, jeongin spoke, his voice low. "you know, I don't think I've ever been this comfortable with anyone before."
seungmin turned to him, his eyes warm. "me neither."
silence.
"seungmin." jeongin whispered after a while-no more than a murmur. "do you think.. maybe. this is something other than friendship?
his heart nearly stopped, but he summoned his composure. "maybe."
jeongin leaned his head upward toward him, and their faces were inches from each other. for a while, none of them moved an inch; they were both entrapped in the gravity of this moment. then, in slow motion, hesitantly, seungmin bent down, and their lips at last met in a soft, tender kiss.
it was soft, almost shy, but it felt like coming home. when they finally pulled apart, Jeongin smiled; his eyes shone bright with happiness.
"that was... nice," he whispered, the teasing glint in his eye.
seungmin rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help smiling. "just nice?"
"okay, maybe it was amazing," jeongin conceded, laughing softly.
melter into the other, bathed in the morning sun's warmth, everything else starting to fade away until it was just them and the soft promise of something new, something real.
at that moment, seungmin thought that maybe he had found something more than friendship. and looking into jeongins eyes, he knew he was ready for whatever was in store up ahead.
