Hana sat alone in her apartment, the glow from the city lights casting a soft shimmer across the walls. Despite the comfort of her surroundings, a heaviness settled over her heart, pressing down like an anchor she couldn't lift. She clutched a steaming mug of tea, the warmth seeping into her palms as she gazed out of her window. The familiar skyline, with its array of lights, served as a stark reminder of her past—a life she had left behind but could never fully escape.

It was on nights like these that her resolve felt weak, the lingering voice of her mother echoing in her mind. Hana could still recall the intensity of their last argument. She had been seated across from her mother in the grand family dining room, surrounded by opulence that now felt suffocating rather than comforting.

Flashback:

"You are squandering your potential, Hana," her mother's voice had cut through the air, sharp and cold. "All the resources we've invested in you, and for what? So you can play teacher and abandon the family?"

Hana had taken a deep breath, steadying her gaze on her mother. She felt a storm of emotions swirling inside—hurt, anger, frustration, but above all, a fierce need to stand her ground.

"Being a teacher isn't a waste, Mother. I'm passionate about it, about helping others grow, about literature. This is my choice, my life."

Her mother's face had twisted in disbelief, a look of disgust flickering across her features. "You're acting selfishly, Hana. You're the only one who can carry on our legacy, the one we've built from nothing. You owe this to our family."

"Maybe I don't want to be a part of that legacy," Hana had shot back, her voice tinged with bitterness. "I want to build something of my own, even if it's smaller, even if it doesn't meet your standards."

Her mother had narrowed her eyes, her voice laced with icy disappointment. "You'll regret this decision, Hana. One day, you'll come to see the sacrifices we made for you and realize the foolishness of turning your back on your family."

Hana snapped back to the present, feeling the familiar pang of guilt and dread. Her family's relentless attempts to bring her back into their world had not waned. Calls, letters, and unexpected visits—they had tried everything. Yet, Hana had refused each time, determined to maintain her independence. But with each encounter, the weight of her decision grew heavier. It was exhausting to constantly push back, to remind herself of why she had left in the first place.

Her phone vibrated on the coffee table, interrupting her thoughts. She picked it up, noticing a message from Yumi: "Are you okay? Just thought I'd check in on you :)"

A small smile tugged at the corners of Hana's lips. Since they had begun their tentative journey into a deeper relationship, Yumi had been her source of comfort and understanding. Hana had found solace in the quiet moments they shared, the vulnerability they allowed each other. Yumi's gentle support reminded her that she didn't have to carry her burdens alone.

She replied, "Do you want to come over? I could use some company."

An hour later, Yumi sat across from Hana in the cozy living room, the silence between them comfortable. They'd chatted about their day, and their current reads, and shared a few laughs. But there was a hint of something deeper in Hana's eyes, a lingering sadness that Yumi couldn't ignore.

Gently, she reached across the coffee table and placed a hand on Hana's. "You seem... distant tonight," she said softly. "Is something on your mind?"

Hana hesitated, uncertainty flickering in her gaze. She rarely shared her past, fearful of the burden it might place on others. But with Yumi, everything felt different. There was something so grounding, so understanding about her presence.
