"Betrayal? Darv, Olfred?" Arthur instantly pushed himself out of his seat, glaring at Aldir with a mixture of shock and a faint twinge of fear. He seemed to understand immediately what such a thing might entail.
"Yes, during the time Tessia's team was attacked in the dungeon. It's suspected that Olfred had contact with the enemy and sent that Retainer to ambush them. Thankfully, Veer was there to stop them," I replied curtly, keeping any emotion from coloring my words.
"Wait, Veer fought both Retainer Uto and Olfred?" Arthur asked again, his gaze shifting incredulously between me and his younger brother.
"No, Olfred merely set the bait before leaving to maintain his cover. It was an ambush to abduct me. Uto told me his leader wanted to experiment with my blood magic. Luckily, my clone gathered the information I needed beforehand to bring Lance Bairon onto the battlefield to confront Olfred," Veer said, boredly spinning a pristine, blood-forged coin in his hand.
Arthur just stared, struggling to digest each piece of information thrown at him so mercilessly. "Wait, wait-so they were trying to abduct you? And what do you mean by a clone?" He looked expectantly at his brother, and even his dragon bond appeared intrigued.
"When you were in Epheotus, I figured out a way to create clones from my blood. It took some fine-tuning, but I've gotten extremely good at it. I decide what kind of powers they hold-very useful." Arthur's eyes continued to widen, and I couldn't help but feel a mix of amusement and pity at the sight.
"You know what, I'll think about that later. The fact is, if you're being targeted, you should stay out of the war, Veer." Arthur quickly regained his composure, speaking calmly, his tone steady with reason.
"Hmmm..." Veer stopped spinning his crimson coin, balancing it on the tip of his finger. His gaze drifted upward to the pristine ceiling before he shrugged lightly. "No, it's not a wise move at the moment. Ever since the attack, the forces have been sparse, uncoordinated, and downright predictable." Veer tilted his head, humming softly before continuing.
"If you'd allow me to speculate, ever since Retainer Uto's demise, the majority of the Alacryan army have been rather clumsy. Instead of planning ambushes like the one that happened to me, they now rely on basic, straightforward strategies that more often than not end in higher casualties and even defeat." He paused for a moment.
"This most likely means that Uto was one of the main players in this war, which, to be fair, is quite obvious given his status and rank. However, it also suggests that communication between Alacryan soldiers on this continent and Alacrya is likely less precise than we expected." Veer's eyes glimmered with something unrecognizable.
The chair he sat on, made from the finest leather, tilted back slightly as its front legs lifted just above the ground before stabilizing, showcasing the boy's insane control over his movement, steady as a leaf caught in a gentle breeze. He plucked the coin from his finger and held it, turning it around to observe it.
He stopped as he realized our stares. I could've sworn his eyes darkened for an instant, like a flicker of shadow, before they returned to normal. He then laughed slightly. "Well, that's my opinion."
