The birds began their morning chorus as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The teenagers stirred from their sleep, the enticing smell of roasted berries and vegetables wafting through the air. Lilly was already awake, carefully tending to the sizzling food over the campfire, her movements precise as if the task provided a brief respite from the weight of their journey.

"What is that smell?" Emma asked, her nose twitching as she stretched and blinked sleepily, her senses gradually sharpening with each breath.

"Mmm, roasted berries!" Amelia chirped excitedly, fluttering her wings, her voice light but edged with the tension that had been building among them.

"Just a typical Elvish breakfast, Emma. Nothing unusual," Damagnus replied, his tone calm, though his eyes held a depth of worry he couldn't quite shake.

Lilly, noticing Ryu still curled up under his blanket, gently nudged him. "Ryu, wake up. Breakfast is ready."

"Huh?" Ryu mumbled, rubbing his eyes and trying to focus, the remnants of his dragon-sleep clinging to him like a heavy fog.

Damagnus chuckled softly. "He definitely inherited his father's dragon sleep."

"Hey!" Ryu protested weakly, giving Damagnus a playful shove, though his mind was still clouded. They quickly finished breakfast, packed their belongings, and began their journey north. The problem was, the forest seemed endless, with every tree, rock, and path looking the same. As they wandered, the sameness of the landscape gnawed at their spirits, turning their frustration into something darker, something desperate.

"Umm... Emma, isn't that the boulder we just passed?" Amelia asked, pointing to a large stone nestled between two oak trees, her voice trembling slightly.

"I don't know," Emma replied, sighing in exasperation. "They all look exactly the same."

"Let me just mark it," Ryu said, his mouth glowing faintly as he prepared to unleash a small burst of dragon fire.

"No!" Lilly shouted, her voice filled with alarm, sharper than she intended. "Are you insane?"

"Oh, come on, it's just a rock," Ryu grumbled, frustration creeping into his tone.

"And if you were about to get burned with dragon fire, would you like that?" Lilly crossed her arms, her glare piercing, as if trying to cut through Ryu's bravado.

Ryu hesitated, the glow in his mouth fading. "No?"

"Exactly. Now let's keep moving," Lilly huffed, but the weariness in her voice betrayed her exhaustion.

"Lilly, let's be honest, a rock is not that big of a dea―"

"Shh!" Lilly interrupted, her tone suddenly serious. "I'm hearing something."

"Hearing what? I don't hear anything," Emma said, glancing around nervously, her senses straining against the oppressive silence that had settled over them.

"Can't you hear the whispers?" Lilly's eyes darted between the trees, her expression growing more concerned, a mix of fear and confusion clouding her features. "It's like a crowd in a busy street, but... it's all wrong. They're all saying different things."

"Can you make out what they're saying?" Amelia asked, her voice tinged with hope, but also dread.

"Some want me to follow them... others are promising to give me stronger powers," Lilly murmured, her voice growing faint, her words trailing off as if they were being pulled away from her. "And I'm... I'm getting dizzy."

Before anyone could react, Lilly's legs buckled, and she collapsed, her body crumpling like a puppet with its strings cut.

"Lilly!" Amelia cried, rushing forward, her wings flaring in panic. Damagnus was quicker, casting a spell that suspended Lilly just above the ground, but he struggled to maintain it, the strain evident in the tightness around his eyes.
