Daniel
Today is the beginning of either a successful life, or a miserable failure. The second option is out of question. I'm a lot of things, a failure isn't one of them. I can't lose. Not only the director position and my inheritance, but also the competition. While my father lived to make me feel like a loser, I lived to prove him wrong. I can't give him the satisfaction of thinking he was right.
I check my reflection in the mirror. I opted for a dark blue suit, specifically tailored for me. I don't want the first impression to be less than perfect. Once I'm satisfied, I leave my penthouse and drive to the hospital.
I find the parking lot full. There is only one spot free next to a beige fiat. I think I'm going to start hating that brand. Thankfully it's not a rare car, so of course she won't be the same one of yesterday. The only good thing about what happened, is the fact that I won't have to deal with her again.
I take the elevator to the roof where the party is taking place. It's already in full swing. People are mingling, some are vibing to the music. I notice my father standing in a table close to the stage with somebody. I walk toward them. My father is the first to notice me.
"No traffic I guess." He says while drinking, again.
"Sorry for the disappointment." He smiles.
"Mr. Daniel. We're glad to have you here. I'm Josh, Mr. David's assistant. I will be the one helping both of you and Mr. James to settle." We shake hands.
"I'm glad to be here too. Thank you."
"Should I start the presentation?" He asks as he stares between me and my father.
"Yes." We both say at the same time.
Mr. Josh motions for the DJ to stop the music. Once everyone goes quiet, he starts his speech.
"Tonight, we all gathered to meet our new future directors. Our hospital is rated the best in the country, thanks to everyone who worked hard for that title. Hope we will see more achievements and success with our new directors. Mr. James and Mr. Daniel." Both of me and my father walk toward the spot where Josh is standing, while everyone else is clapping.
Well, everyone, except for one girl who's busy eating, until the girl next to her nudged her shoulder. She starts clapping while still holding the cake. I can't see her profile due to the dark illumination. She's wearing a black dress that hugs her curves, a slit reaching a little up her knee. Black shiny hair with soft curls in the bottom. The lights above her turns on and her face came into view. I can recognize those sky-blue eyes anywhere.
You must be kidding me.
She feels the heat of my gaze and her eyes snap to mine. When she recognizes my face, she drops her glass and it shatters. Everyone looks at her, and I can't hold my smile. Her cheeks blush as she excuses herself. The girl next to her follow close behind.
"That's what happens when residents don't get enough sleep." Josh says and everybody laughs.
So, she's a resident. Interesting. Me and my father express our gratitude and excitement to be part of the hospital. Once that done, Josh introduces us to the different people attending. We keep strolling through the tables. The crazy girl didn't come back yet. Sounds like she ran away.
My amusement didn't last too long before she enters the room again with her friend by her side. Her head held high. Josh informs us that the final young-looking group are residents. He leaves us to enjoy the party. My father leaves my side too, thankfully.
A blonde girl with green eyes came to stand in front of me.
"Hello, I'm Gemma." She says as she bats her eye lashes at me. I know the signs. But I have a rule, never engage with my employees.
