QUINN'S POV
~~~~~~~~~~
I brushed out my hair, humming the tune of an illegal song. Of course, I couldn't sing the words, that would get me caught. But I'm sure I could just hum the tune then change it if someone were to walk in.
"Quinn!" Mama yelled. "Michaels here!"
I stopped brushing. Michael? What's he doing here?
"Uh—yeah, I'll be down in a bit mama!" I shouted, fixing my collar quickly and grabbing my school bag.
I ran downstairs, where Michael was impatiently checking his watch. When I appeared at the door, I could tell we both had the same unamused looks on our faces.
"Bye, mama, I'll be back after school," I shouted, walking out the door of the embassy.
When Michael and I were outside, I turned to him and knocked on his head.
"Ow—Quinn, what are you doing?"
"I'm just checking if your head is hollow, which it apparently is! Why would you show up at my door?"
Michael sighed, as if he was annoyed at the question.
"Ma thought that we would 'get to know each other better' if I walked to school with you," he replied.
"Well, that was dumb," I scoffed. "We go to schools in entirely different buildings!"
"Yeah, I tried to tell her that, but she wouldn't listen."
I groaned and tossed my head back. This was just great.
"I'll see you later," Michael said when we reached my school building, holding a hand up for a goodbye.
I smiled softly and shook my head lightly. Even though Michael was an annoying gumshoe, it didn't mean I had to be such a jerk.
"Bye, Michael. See you after school," I replied waving. He turned around and walked away, just for my only two friends, Anneliese and Erika, to immediately shriek behind me.
"Oh my gosh, Quinn, do you have a boyfriend?!" Erika asked excitedly.
"I—what no! Michael's just a friend!" I sputtered, holding my hands up.
"Sureee—anyways, he's cute! You might have a catch!" Anneliese giggled. I rolled my eyes with a smile. Anneliese thought any boy within a five mile radius was cute.
"Girls, inside quickly now!" Frau Müller said loudly, clapping her hands. We all followed her inside, conversing about whatever was interesting to us that day.
I sat down and opened my bag, to which I noticed a note that was placed inside. I did the German Look and unfolded it.
I found out the Hitler Youth and the BDM will do something together today. I'm mentioning this because I need to talk to you.
—Michael
I blushed. My heart started racing. Wait—what? Oh, hell no. I took some deep breaths and put the note back in my bag. Once my heart rate returned to normal, I could finally pay attention to what the teacher was saying.
"...we will be joining the boys in burning books today. Remember, it is our duty and our duty alone to rid this beautiful country of the degenerate filth lying beneath the surface."
I internally cringed. Burning books? I wanted to yell at the top of my lungs about how wrong that was, but I kept to myself and kept quiet.
"Now, girls, line up in an orderly fashion. We are heading into town."
