I turn and throw my last knife, holding my breath as it flies through the air and hits the orange figure, shattering it into a hundred pieces. The lights turn on and my best friend Clove bursts into the room, "I knew you could do it!" She says , giving me a hug.
I've been trying to master this level for weeks now and had started to think that I would never beat it. Clove steps back and grins at me "You should come over to my house for supper to celebrate," She says.
I hesitate my father will be angry if I'm not there when he gets home, but today is Friday and he usually stays out to drink with his friends on the weekends.
"Come on, you're not still afraid of my mom are you?" Clove teases.
Clove's mom, Enobaria is a victor and was forced to have her teeth filed into fangs after her had to literally rip the throat out of one of the tributes in her games. Despite what most people think, she's actually really nice, but the first time I met her I was terrified. Which Clove teases me about to no end.
"That was seven years ago, when are you going to let me forget about it?" I laugh"As soon as I can forget the look on your face when she smiled at you!" Clove replies, "Seriously though Katie's been begging to see you again, and you know my parents won't mind if you come." Kaitlin, otherwise known as Katie, is Clove's eight year old sister, with her dark brown hair and eyes she is like a younger version of her older sister, and Clove will do anything for her.
"Ok," I decide, "but I can't stay late, I need to leave by at least ten."
"Great, lets go."
"Have your parents decide who our tributes are going to be this year?" I ask as we walk out of the academy. Here in district two the victors take turns mentoring the tributes, and whoever is mentoring for the year also gets to pick who will volunteer. Clove's father Brutus is also a victor and he and Enobaria are the mentors this year. With the reaping in three days everyone has been talking about it.
"I think that they decided on Rhett Smith for the boy, and Lindsey Hall for the girl." Replies Clove.
"They really think Lindsey would have a chance at winning?" I ask in disbelief. Although she does ok in training, I can think of at least a dozen other girls who would be better. "She would never survive" I say.
"I think her dad had something to do with it" says Clove "Mom was planning to pick Erin Hadley, but changed her mind at the last minute.
We reach Clove's house and Katie nearly tackles me. "Will you help me with my trident again?" She begs.
"Nice to see you too, maybe if your mom says its ok I can help you after supper" I say.
I used to live in district four before my mother died and I had to come live here in district two with my father, but for a while before my mother died I stayed with my Aunt Anna, Uncle Jonathan and my cousin Finnick.
During that time Finnick became like an older brother to me. Even though he's six years older than me he would spend hours with me, teaching me how to swim and use the trident.
I remember the day he got reaped like it was yesterday. I had just moved to district two, and didn't even have any friends yet. It felt like one of the worst days of my life.
When he won I begged my father to let me see him but the day he was here on his victory tour, my father locked me in my room for the entire day. I think he was afraid that if I got to see Finnick I might go home with him.
"Brook?" I must have missed something because Clove is looking at me like I'm supposed to say something.
"Sorry, what did you say?
"I asked if you remember Cashmere and Gloss." I look up and see Cashmere standing in the doorway to the kitchen.
"Oh, yes we've met at your house a couple times." I say?
"It's nice to see you again."says Cashmere,
"Hi, it's Brook, right? Says Gloss appearing behind his sister.
"Yes," I reply, giving them a small smile.
"How did y'all get to come so close to the games?" Asks Clove.
"We're both mentoring this year so if either of our districts wins this year we won't be able to visit anytime soon." Says Gloss.
As Clove makes small talk with Cashmere and Gloss, I go to the kitchen to see if Enobaria needs any help fixing supper. "Hi Clove it's good to see you again," she says.
"Hi," I say, "do you need help with anything,"
"No, I think everything is about ready," she says, "thanks for offering though. "How's your training been going?"
"It's fine, Clove has been helping me with my knife throwing" I reply.
After we eat Katie and I go out in the backyard and I spend a little while helping her with her trident.
Even though the trident is probably one of the least used weapons in district two, Katie insisted on learning to use it rather than a sword or knives, and ever since I gave her some pointers one time, she begs me to help her every time she sees me.
Before I know it, it's time to go home. As I leave I'm already starting to worry that I've stayed to late. If Father finds out that I didn't come straight home he won't be happy.
When I get home I'm relieved to see that all of the lights are off. I hurriedly shower and get ready for bed. I turn all of the lights off so that he will think that I'm already asleep, than read for awhile before actually going to bed.
