THE SOUND OF the numbers beeping in the lock of the front door made Rafe turn his head, watching Zakai walk through while he ran his hand down his face. "Figured you went to see Melody?"

"We talked." Kai muttered, glancing down at his arms and lap. Kaiya was sound asleep with her Chucky doll in her arms while Kimora lied across Rafe's lap, asleep as well.

"Talked?" Rafe raised an eyebrow.

"Mhm." Kai hummed and walked past them, turning his head over his shoulder.

"Upstairs. Both of them."

He turned back around and slowly ascended the spiral staircase, staring into nothingness when he reached the top. Zakai could feel the overwhelming sadness that poured from Zaina's bedroom. He didn't feel actual sadness himself, the emotion never registered to him to begin with, but he knew she was in pain.

Not killing Melody sat heavy on Zakai's heart but he just couldn't bring himself to kill her right then and there. He despised her, but at the same time, her father was the one to put that shit in motion. Attachment was one hell of a thing because in another world, she would've died on the side of that road.

She would've never been able to pull over, she wouldn't have even made it from her home. Guilt wasn't an emotion or even a word in Zakai's feelings or vernacular, though, the voice in his head told him he might've fucked up. During this moment, he felt like he owed something to Zaina and Jasper.

Pushing the bedroom door open, his eyes stayed ahead when he saw Zaina walking from her bathroom, clearly departing from a heavy crying session. She hadn't been able to stop crying ever since she told her brother and Kai what happened to her. She slept for all of two hours and afterwards, every dream she had turned into a harrowing nightmare.
