ZAINALOOKED DOWN at a sleeping Zakaiya in her arms, hearing nothing but the deafening silence of Zakai's house. After a while, it seemed as if he had finally tired himself out. Standing up slowly, Zaina opened the closet door, half expecting to see Zakai standing outside of those doors but when she saw that he wasn't, she placed Kaiya on the bed and put the covers over her body, watching her snuggle into the pillow beneath her head.
Zai looked around the room and then stared at the barricade she made, seeing the door cracked open slightly. He had almost made his way in. What confused her was why he suddenly stopped. She had pressed that button on her necklace hours ago and when she heard the sirens stopped, she cried to herself in the closet thinking that Rafe and Roman weren't coming to her rescue like they had promised her.
Inching towards the barricade, Zaina climbed on top of the couch and then the tv stand, holding her breath as she peered out. Looking down, she saw absolutely nothing below. Furrowing her eyebrows, she got off of the tv stand and took it down from the couch, along with the dresser that was next to it and pushed the couch out of her way.
She pried the door open a bit and when it was wide enough, she slipped her body through it and felt her hands shaking at her sides. It was stupid of her to come out of hiding but she had to get out of there, after finding out that he, and the one person who vowed to never lie to her, did exactly that, she felt as if she had no where else to run, no where except to the boy she had chosen them over again.
But first, she had to find her phone.
Walking down the hallway, she had to stop herself from gasping at the trail of destruction Zakai had caused. The glass from the framed pictures that lined the stairs was all over the floor, making her watch her step more than she already was. Holes the size of his fists lined the wall and she put the back of her hand to her mouth when she finally realized that he had kicked down the door that led to the den.
"Oh my God.." She shakily whispered, rolling her lips in as she crept further along. Pressing her back up against the wall when she reached the middle of the second floor hallway, she peered into Zakaiya's room, seeing her phone on the dresser. Once she saw that Zakai wasn't in there either, she ran in quietly and snatched her phone, holding it tightly in her hands, freezing when she heard the soft murmurs of Zakai's voice from below her.
Zakai sat with his knees against his chest, rocking back and forth on the floor of his kitchen, just as he used to do when he was having an episode as a child. "Leave me alone, leave me alone, leave me alone." He chanted over and over again, staring into space with a blank face while Leo screamed and paced in front of him
