*Atticus' POV*
I pressed down on the accelerator, desperate to get home quickly and tell Zayana everything. But as the thought hit me that I'm a flawed person, it felt like my body froze, paralyzed. I questioned myself—am I even worthy of her?
I slowed the car, letting my thoughts consume me as I pulled over on a deserted road. I couldn’t wait until I reached home to tell Zayana about this helpless feeling inside me, like a stranded boat that neither sinks nor reaches the shore.
Holding my phone, I turned it over in my hands, lost in the single thought that if I confessed the truth, she might leave me. Just then, my phone vibrated. It was a call from Zayana. My heart seemed to skip a beat as my mind went blank.
I answered, and before I could say anything, she spoke up.
“It’s been the whole day, Atticus. You haven’t texted. I called this evening, and you didn’t even pick up.”Each word of hers echoed in my heart, filling the silence between us. I was torn between telling her the truth about myself and confessing the love I held for her. But did she even feel the same?
“Atticus? Are you even listening? I’m saying something. Hello?”
Her words pulled me back from my thoughts.“Zayana, why are you so worried? Can’t stand to be without me?”
She replied, “Obviously, after Stacy, you're my best friend. I was worried about you, not knowing where you were.”
I hesitated before saying, “Zayana…do you believe that love can happen without even seeing the person? It’s not just lust and desire, right?”
“Of course, it’s possible,” she answered, pausing briefly before asking, “Atticus, are you alright?”
“Yes…I’m fine. Zayana…what if I said I don’t feel complete without you?”
She laughed softly, “Hahaha, don’t be silly.”
“I’m serious,” I insisted. “I was at a party, but all I could think about was you. I left the party and came straight here.”
“Atticus, isn’t this a bit too soon? You haven’t even seen me yet.”
“Someday, we will. Hope keeps the world going, right?” I replied
“Atticus…even if I die, I could never meet you. Why do you think I’m joking?”
“Forget about that,” I replied. “I like you, Zayana, and I’ll do whatever it takes to be with you.”
She sighed, “Atticus…I don’t know if this is love or what it is, but there was this restlessness all day that vanished when I heard your voice. What kind of magic do you practice?”
“Oh, of course! I was a hot witch in my past life, all the witches were crazy about me!”
“Right! That must be why you have that wicked laugh,” she teased.
We both laughed, and I leaned back against the hood of the car, breathing deeply, while on the other end, Zayana settled against her pillow.
“Zayana,” I murmured, “I like you…a lot.”
Her voice turned playful, “Good for you!”
“What do you mean ‘good for you’? Don’t you like me?” I said, feigning annoyance.
“Nope, I don’t,” she teased.
“Fine, I’m going back to the party then!”
“Hahaha, dumb… I like you too.” She said
“Don’t say ‘too’! It sounds like you’re just saying it out of obligation.”
She softened, “I like you, Atticus…”
“Oh, baby, you don’t know how happy that makes me.”
“Okay, now let me go, I have school tomorrow,” she said, trying to wrap up the call.
“Just talk for a little while longer, then you can sleep.”
“Atticus…please.”
“Alright, fine. But promise to call me in the morning. I have something to tell you.” I said
“Okay…oh, and send me a picture! Stacy wants to see what you look like.” She commanded
“Alright, I’ll send one.”
“Goodnight,” she whispered.
“Goodnight, love,” I replied.
