the call

Okay, so I was on FaceTime with George, and we were talking about everything—like, literally everything. He kept calling me “babe” and saying stuff like, “If I was there, I’d bring you all the crisps in the world.” And I was like, “George, you don’t even like half those snacks,” but he just grinned at me like an idiot and I was totally grinning back.

Then I heard voices just outside my room. I shushed George and leaned toward the door, trying to hear. It was Pops and Dad, and they were whispering, which usually means they’re up to something.

“So, you think Haddie and George are gonna get married someday?” Pops said in this serious voice that made me almost choke. Married? We’re like thirteen!

George saw my face and was like, “What are they saying?” I just shook my head and kept listening.

Dad laughed. “You think so? They’re practically kids!”

“Yeah,” Pops replied, “but they’re already acting like they’re in love, talking all day and giggling. I mean, just listen to ‘em!”

George raised his eyebrows at me, looking all smug. “See? Even they can tell we’re perfect for each other.”

“Oh my gosh, shush!” I hissed, trying not to laugh too loud.

Then Dad whispered, “Okay, fine. But if they do, I get to do the toast. And trust me, I’ve got plenty of stories to embarrass them with.”

My jaw dropped, and George’s eyes went huge. “Imagine if they actually did a toast at our wedding,” he whispered, looking way too amused.

“Not happening!” I whispered back, but I couldn’t help grinning like an idiot. The whole thing was just too funny.

Pops and Dad finally walked away, still mumbling about us, and George grinned into the screen. “Guess we’ve got their approval, huh?”

“Stop,” I said, trying to act annoyed, but honestly? It was kinda sweet that my dads already thought of us like that.
