The forest around them was alive with a symphony of sounds-the soft rustle of leaves, the occasional hoot of an owl, the crackle of branches underfoot. Silas led the group, his gaze steady, his thoughts focused on the path ahead. Beside him, Amara kept pace, her expression determined, while Nimerta moved with silent grace, her keen elven senses attuned to every shift in the air. Thistle, ever the watchful gnome, trudged along with his dagger strapped to his side, muttering charms to ward off any unwanted spirits that might cross their path.
"The Hollows have suffered long enough under Malakar's rule," Silas said, breaking the silence, his voice a low murmur. "We'll give them back their freedom, but it won't come without a fight."
Amara nodded, her face resolute. "The people are ready. I've heard whispers-many of them are secretly training, practicing whatever skills they have in hopes of resisting his soldiers. But they're waiting for a sign, for someone to lead them."
"That's where we come in," Thistle muttered, glancing up at Silas with a grim smile. "If we manage to get this jewel from the Seerer, we'll have the edge we need to break through his defenses."
Silas's gaze sharpened. The jewel was more than just a weapon; it held ancient powers, said to protect against dark magic and reveal truths hidden even from powerful sorcerers. If they could obtain it, their chances against Malakar's coven would vastly improve.
"The Seerer is cautious," Nimerta added, her tone laced with quiet reverence. "She doesn't part with such treasures lightly. We'll need to prove ourselves worthy."
Silas nodded, his resolve unwavering. "Then we will. She'll see that we have no other choice."
They walked in silence for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts. Silas's mind raced, considering every step they'd need to take to dismantle Malakar's grip on the Hollows. The plan was ambitious, and the risks were steep, but the image of the Hollow's oppressed people-the fear in their eyes, the chains binding their spirits-drove him forward.
Amara's voice cut through his thoughts. "What will you do once the Hollows are free?"
Silas paused, glancing back at her, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "I haven't thought that far ahead," he admitted. "But I know that as long as Malakar rules, none of us are safe."
Thistle snorted softly. "You know what I'll do-I'll raid his wine cellars, drink until I'm seeing stars, and then drink a bit more for good measure."
A soft laugh rippled through the group, a brief moment of levity amidst the tension. Even Nimerta allowed herself a small smile, her eyes softening.
Their laughter faded as they reached a denser part of the forest, the air thickening, growing heavier with each step. The underbrush tangled around their feet, as if reluctant to let them pass.
Silas's expression turned grave. "Stay alert. The closer we get to the Seerer, the closer we get to the edge of Malakar's reach."
As if in response, the shadows around them deepened, the forest seeming to close in, shrouding them in a silence that felt both watchful and wary. Silas's senses prickled, his skin tingling with an unseen energy that brushed against his mind.
Then he felt it-a chill creeping up his spine, the faint rustle of something watching from the shadows. The air grew thick and damp, and a sickly green mist seeped from the underbrush, coiling around his ankles like creeping tendrils...
---
Silas felt it-a shadow that coiled within the night itself. The air was different, laced with an unnatural weight that pressed against his skin, thick and cloying. The forest was dense around them, trees looming like silent sentinels, their branches twisting into shapes that almost seemed to reach for him as he passed.
