Seonghwa's heart raced as he stumbled forward, his hand still entwined with Hongjoong's as they moved deeper into the wooded path, their laughter mingling with the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds. The world felt sharper, more vibrant in that moment, as if the air itself was alive with excitement and possibility.
Eventually, Hongjoong slowed, his steps easing into a relaxed stride as they emerged into a small clearing. The late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled light over the soft grass and the serene surface of a lake nestled quietly within the forest. It was as if the world had conspired to create a hidden haven just for the two of them.
Hongjoong let go of Seonghwa's hand, his face still lit with a playful grin as he gestured to the lake. "This is it. My escape from the palace, the only place I can go to be... well, just me."
Seonghwa's chest rose and fell as he tried to catch his breath, his eyes widening as he took in the beauty of the secluded spot. The lake stretched out before them, a tranquil mirror reflecting the sky and the trees. The scene felt almost unreal, as if it were a piece of a dream he'd wandered into by accident.
"I... I didn't know there was a place like this so close to the palace," Seonghwa murmured, still awed by their surroundings.
Hongjoong chuckled, a fondness in his gaze as he looked out over the water. "It's been my secret since I was a boy," he admitted, folding his arms and rocking back on his heels. "Even the palace guards don't know I come here. It's a place for me to remember who I am beyond all the titles and expectations."
"Why... did you bring me here?" Seonghwa asked, a playful spark in his eyes as he lowered himself onto the soft grass, gazing out over the lake. "I mean... why me? I could be plotting your murder as we speak." He smirked, leaning back and crossing his arms, feigning nonchalance. "I thought the royal guard would have taught you to be a bit more careful than that, Your Highness."
Hongjoong let out a soft laugh, the sound warm and carefree. He settled down beside Seonghwa, stretching out his legs and leaning back on his hands as he looked over the water, seemingly unbothered by the gentle teasing.
"Oh, trust me," he replied, his tone just as playful. "I'm fairly certain that if you wanted to kill me, you'd have done so already. Besides," he added with a slight smirk, glancing over at Seonghwa, "I find you really cute."
Seonghwa's smirk faltered, and he felt his cheeks flush as Hongjoong's words settled in. His heart skipped a beat, and he quickly looked away, hoping to hide the warmth spreading across his face.
"You... think I'm cute?" he managed, his voice barely a whisper. He tried to keep his composure, but the shy smile tugging at his lips betrayed him.
Hongjoong chuckled, clearly amused by Seonghwa's reaction. "Very much so," he replied smoothly, his gaze softening as he continued to study Seonghwa's face. "There's something refreshing about you, Seonghwa. You're honest, maybe even a little blunt. It's... well, it's nice to be around someone who doesn't filter everything through the lens of my title."
Seonghwa bit his lip, his flustered expression slowly turning into something more genuine as he dared to meet Hongjoong's gaze. "I suppose that's one way to describe me," he said with a laugh, though his voice was still tinged with embarrassment. "But if you find it refreshing, then I guess I'm doing something right."
