Jean's Memory – Age 5
The stars were so close Jean could almost touch them.
Or at least, that's what it felt like on warm nights when she'd lie in the grass and gaze up, watching the tiny points of light wink and shimmer against the velvet sky. She loved to imagine what lay beyond them. Each star seemed to hold a secret, a spark of magic just waiting to be discovered. She felt drawn to that magic, an intense feeling that grew stronger each day, though she was too young to understand what it meant.
One summer night, a strange warmth filled her, settling like a fire in her chest. It wasn't frightening, just... different. She lay there, feeling the warmth build, her small hands clenching and unclenching in the grass. Her eyelids grew heavy, and she let herself drift into that warmth, her mind blurring as though she was slipping into a dream.
But this was no ordinary dream.
When she opened her eyes, the world around her had transformed. She stood in a vast landscape of swirling colors, where every direction seemed to stretch out into infinity. Red and gold light danced around her like ribbons of fire, illuminating everything in a gentle, flickering glow. There was a sense of movement in the air, as though she was surrounded by an enormous, living presence.
In the center of this surreal space was a great being, unlike anything she'd ever seen. It looked like a bird, but a bird made of pure, living flame. Its feathers shifted and pulsed with power, each one a flickering ember in a body of cosmic fire. The creature's eyes were molten gold, and as they locked onto Jean's, she felt as if the entire universe was staring back at her.
Jean felt a strange surge of recognition, like she'd known this creature forever. And yet, she wasn't afraid. Instead, a wide, curious smile crossed her face, and she took a step closer. "You're beautiful," she whispered, awe filling her voice. "Are you like me?"
The Phoenix tilted its head, its fiery feathers shimmering with something almost like amusement.
Child, it spoke, the voice soft yet carrying an immense weight. It was like a thousand voices echoing in perfect harmony, each syllable sending shivers through Jean's bones. You do not fear me?
Jean shook her head, her eyes bright with excitement. "No. I think you're amazing! I...I want to be like you."
The Phoenix's gaze softened, and for a moment, it seemed almost amused by her innocence and curiosity. It leaned closer, and Jean could feel its warmth radiate through her entire being. Flames danced around her, wrapping her in a cocoon of fire, yet she felt no pain. Only wonder.
Then, Jean Grey, the Phoenix spoke again, its voice gentler this time, if you truly wish it, I shall become a part of you. Together, we shall be one. You will carry my fire, my strength, and my purpose.
Jean's young mind was too small to grasp the true meaning of the Phoenix's words, but she felt their importance deep in her bones. She closed her eyes, her face breaking into a smile as she let the Phoenix's power wash over her. She felt the warmth sink into every part of her, filling her with a strange energy and knowledge that went beyond her understanding.
When she opened her eyes again, she was lying in the grass in her backyard. The stars twinkled above her, as if winking in understanding. Jean took a deep breath, feeling different somehow, like a spark had been lit inside her that would never go out. She couldn't explain it, but she knew that she was no longer just a little girl.
Present Day – X-Mansion Training Grounds
Years later, Jean Grey stood alone in the X-Mansion's training grounds, her focus as sharp as a blade. With a flick of her wrist, she conjured a circle of blue fire around her, the flames crackling softly as they rose and fell with her steady breathing. Each movement was careful, controlled. Jean practiced daily, ensuring that her power was always under her command.
