Arrival in New York
The Quinjet soared over the New York skyline, cutting through the air as the sounds of battle echoed below. The Chitauri had descended upon the city in full force, and chaos reigned in every direction. Buildings crumbled under the relentless bombardment, and fires spread across the city like wild brush. The Avengers were scattered across Manhattan, working together to try and stem the tide of invaders.
Jean Grey stood at the front of the Quinjet, her calm gaze focused on the destruction below. As much as she could feel the heat of battle, the pain of those suffering, she was far removed from it. The Phoenix Force that burned within her was not an outside entity to be wielded—it was a part of her, and she had long since mastered every facet of her being. The Infinity Stones that she had absorbed over the years—Space, Power, Time, Reality, Mind, and Soul—no longer gave her any additional power. She was already more than the sum of these cosmic relics.
The stones rested within her, dormant, held in a delicate balance she controlled effortlessly. She had hidden them deep within herself, binding their powers together, ensuring they would never overwhelm her. They were simply... there, like pieces of an ancient puzzle that no longer needed to be solved.
"Jean," Tony Stark's voice crackled through her earpiece. "You ready to play the hero?"
Jean didn't answer immediately. She wasn't concerned about playing any particular role. She was here because she had to be. The Phoenix had never cared for titles or accolades—her purpose was to protect life, to guide the universe's balance. Today, that balance meant stopping an invasion.
She turned to look at the team around her: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the rest of the Avengers. They were warriors, each in their own right. They needed her—maybe more than they understood. But she would not let them down.
"I'm ready," she said quietly, her voice steady and firm.
The First Wave of Attack
The Quinjet descended into the heart of Manhattan, the streets below filled with chaos. Chitauri soldiers poured from the sky in their sleek, serpentine ships, firing blaster bolts and causing massive damage. The Avengers dropped into action, scattering to take on different groups of invaders. Jean leapt from the Quinjet before it even landed, her body surrounded by a shimmering aura of psychic energy as she levitated a few feet off the ground. Her eyes blazed with the light of the Phoenix Force, burning bright as she focused on the battle before her.
Iron Man was already engaging a squadron of Chitauri with missiles and repulsor blasts. Thor swung Mjolnir, sending arcs of lightning to tear through alien ships. Captain America held his ground, using his shield to protect civilians and strike down those who approached him.
Jean, however, was on another level. She didn't need weapons. She didn't need strength. The Phoenix Force was all she needed. With a wave of her hand, she sent a ripple of psychic energy through the street, throwing Chitauri soldiers into the air with ease. Each blast from their weapons was deflected by an invisible psychic barrier, as if they were nothing more than annoying flies to her.
Her mind reached out to the chaos around her, pulling together the scattered pieces of her surroundings. Crushed cars, debris, and shattered concrete rose up from the ground, swirling in a vortex around her as she directed them toward the Chitauri soldiers. With a flick of her wrist, the debris crashed into their ranks, knocking them back and incapacitating them in a matter of moments.
Thor landed beside her with a mighty crash, his face lit with awe as he saw the power Jean wielded so effortlessly.
"Impressive," Thor said, his deep voice full of admiration.
