Alaska

My eyes fluttered open on a cold, January morning. The snow glittering outside caught my attention, as I slipped out of my bed, and walked into the kitchen to get some breakfast.

My mom was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee.
"Morning, Alaska. Want me to make you anything?"
"Nope. I dont need your help." I said, grabbing the milk out of the fridge.
I felt my mom roll her eyes. "Dont need to have such a chip on your shoulder all the time."

I had always been cold all of my life. To my family, to my friends, even to myself. I liked when it was cold. I hated warmth. Yeah sometimes warm things are nice, like a nice warm blanket, or a hot shower, but snow, iced coffee, air conditioning: all great things.

I grabbed a bowl, and some store-brand Lucky Charms, and made myself a bowl of cereal.

As I sat at the table, I began to feel how hot it was in the house.
"Mom? Can we turn the heating off?"
"Babe, it's freezing out! We need the heat on!"
I groaned. "Mom, I'm like sweating!"
"No, Alaska. Its cold out. Be normal and wear a sweatshirt or something."

Even though it was probably about 30 degrees outside, I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. I rolled my eyes at my mom, and finished my bowl. I carefully set the bowl down in the sink, and went back into my room, where it was nice and cold all the time.

I took my phone out of the charger, and checked my messages. A few notifications on twitter, and instagram I scrolled past, and then I found a text from my friend Lacey. She asked to come over for a bit. Of course, having nothing to do every day anyways, I texted her back saying yeah.

I screamed from my room to my mom.

"MOM! Laceys coming over!"
I heard my mom spill her coffee, and I laughed.

"Shit, Alaska!" My mom groaned. "Alright. I'll let her in when she gets here."

I waited patiently for Lacey to come. I scrolled through social media, listened to music, read one page of a book and got bored, and did practically anything to waste the next twenty minutes I had to wait. As soon as I heard the door open, and Lacey's voice from the living room, I sprung up, and opened my bedroom door to face a blonde haired, brown eyed friend of mine.

"Hey, Ally." She laughed.
"Gross. Dont call me that."

She giggled, and gave me a hug. We then both jumped onto my bed, and just lied there, and talked.

"Oh my fucking god, how are you wearing shorts."
"I dont know," I said laughing. "I like the cold."
"Youre a feisty one." She laughed.

"I like video games." She told me for the fiftieth time.
"I know." I said taking a sip of water. "You talk about them all day, and play them all day."
"I just like technology."

"Im really not looking foreword to school." I said, groaning.
"We still have some winter break left. We'll be fine."
I sighed. "I wish it would snow forever so we dont have to go back ever. I dont feel like being fat shamed, made fun of, or have any panic attacks anymore."
"Just ignore those girls. You dont have to deal with them. Youre not even fat."
I shrugged.

Then she said something that kinda pissed me off.
"Why do you think your dad left you and your mom?"
"Uhm." I said annoyed. "Weird question. I dont know. Id rather not talk about it."
"Oh come on. Youve gotta have an idea."
I was getting angry. "Not really."

"Do you think he hated your mom?"
"Didnt want a kid?"
"Just left because he was an alcoholic or a drug addict?"

"Will you shut up? Its bitchy, Lacey. Just shut the fuck up."
"Do you think he was a criminal or like a rapist and couldnt handle the guilt?"
