Dick looks out onto the grimy city. Gotham always was a disgusting city, writhing with vile criminals and execrable pimp-lords. Swallowing his disdain for the city, he decides to take a walk. This was one of those nights where he could be Dick Grayson instead of "Nightwing". He usually preferred work. It was something he did to satisfy his father. Dick could've always picked a normal day job or even some underground work. Not that he had a preference. It was just something to make money and he felt good doing it. He looked good doing it.
He decided to freshen up before leaving, not knowing what might be in store for him. Looking into the mirror he traced his jaw deciding that shaving wasn't necessary. Blue jeans and a button-up with a leather jacket thrown over. Nothing too impressive. It wasn't like he was planning on seeing anyone anyway. He didn't have anyone he considered special in his life; someone he could hold onto when times get tough. This wasn't unusual for heroes like him. Having a significant other and balancing the hero life was difficult. He knew his father always had woman issues and he didn't want to take part.
Walking down the street he encountered some interesting personalities. He knew it was bad, but not this bad. He planned on visiting his favorite sushi place, "Lola's Fresh Sashimi". He had expensive taste, most likely because of his father, Bruce Wayne. He had rarely experienced poverty, only the kind you see walking down a dark alley. He always felt bad for the souls that had to endure such lives. He knew somewhere in Gotham there were innocent people. Innocent people tormented by those who ruined their lives and were spreading their bitterness.
A voice echoed loudly from a distant street corner. It sounded like a woman. Dick sped up to search around the corner. It was a strip club. It's not unusual to hear anything around those places. He waited around the area for about 20 seconds to see if there was any real conflict. He began to turn onto another street when he heard a woman's voice scream.
"Get OFF of me!"
He sprinted towards the screams. His met eyes with hers. It's like her soul had reached into his. He had firmly grabbed the woman away from the man.
"Get outta here boy! This is none of your business!!"
Somehow Dick knew that even though he was off duty it was very much his business.
"I'm just trying to run a business! You know living in Gotham is hell!"
The woman spoke:
"I'm not working for you...I have a job already."
Just as he let go of her, the man swung his cane; barely missing Dick and grazing the woman. This was enough to thoroughly anger him. He had swung for the man when he slammed the cane across Dick's back causing him to meet the ground...slightly unconscious. Then it was all a blur.
Midnight had been walking through the streets of Gotham on an international mission. She had been to America but wasn't fully familiar with the customs. A man approached her claiming to be with the U.A. mission's agency. Somehow, she knew he was lying when the man grabbed her and brought her to some rundown strip club. She knew she had the ability to rid of him at any moment but decided to deal with it verbally. Suddenly a man close to her age decided to be a vigilante. Although she had admired his boldness and found it quite charming, he still ended up taking a nap on the pavement. She ripped her sleeve emitting a sweet scent into the air.
Dick opened his eyes, seeing a familiar face loom over him. Midnight had leaned over Dick, waiting for him to regain consciousness. He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Hey there, pretty girl..."
"Woah there young man, I'm way too old for you. Plus, I have no idea who you are."
"We can change that."
Midnight was sure that he was still being affected by her quirk. She tried to pick him up and set him up against a wall. Because she didn't want to sit out in the Gotham streets all night, she had turned to the last resort. Quirk reversal pens. She grabbed one and snapped the cap off; injecting it into his thigh. He groaned in pain. She placed her hand on his thigh to try and ease any residual pain. Dick quickly gained full consciousness and turned to her. They sat there face to face before they launched away from each other.
"Wait woah, who are you!?"
"I'm nobody. Sorry. There was this guy, but it's all good now. Bye."
"Wait, are you okay? Where is the guy?"
She pointed to the man tied up against a light pole.
"I'm fine. I need to get going"
He knew that what he was going to do next was probably a bad idea.
"Are you sure? Would you maybe want to go somewhere and get something to eat? I was just going to thi-"
"I'm sure. I really have to go."
Midnight had no business with love or relationships after what happened back a couple of years ago. Dick walked towards her.
"Please..."
His eyes screamed desperate, but since he tried to help her, she felt obligated. They had continued a few blocks down and entered the restaurant. It was late that night, maybe 1:00-2:00 am. He had entered the building handing the doorman a card and in a low tone said "Grayson". They had sat down at the bar. It was a rather upscale establishment.
"Get anything you want...It's on me."
"No, I got it. You're the one that saved me after all."
Dick had forgotten about that. He really didn't meddle in love, but something was different about this woman.
"Maybe we should have a normal introduction. Hello, I'm Dick Grayson, how are you?"
"Nemuri, Nemuri Kayama, and I'm doing fine. Well as fine as you can be after a fight."
They exchanged glances.
"Do you live around here? Gotham, I mean..."
"Uh, no. Actually, I'm traveling from overseas. A work trip."
"..."
"And you? Do you live in Gotham? It's not exactly the best city in America."
"Well, I work under my father. Plus, there's a lot of business in Gotham."
"I see."
They both knew something was up. Why would he be so eager to fight that guy? What does he mean by business? He had witnessed her ability back at the fight. He had assumed it was just his lack of consciousness. How did she tie that guy up?
"What exactly do you do for work?" She asked first.
Assuming he might never see her again. Dick decided to be honest.
"Well, I fight "Villains" as stupid as it sounds."
"No... No, actually, it's not stupid."
"I um, actually do the same thing. Weirdly enough."
"Wow, I haven't talked with many other heroes. Especially internationally"
"Hey, how old are you? I don't wanna be talking with a boy. I see you're just now getting your baby hairs."
Dick felt slightly embarrassed regretting his decision earlier.
"Probably not much older than you."
"Older? You must be joking, Mr. Grayson"
They had continued to exchange regular conversation before she realized her time was crucial. The mission counted on it.
"I'm sorry, I have to go."
"Wait, before you go...when will I see you again?"
"I don't know. Maybe sometime soon...Mr. Grayson"
