"I don't think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains."
- Anne Frank

---

Time has passed, and with it Maeve has fought everyday to get out of bed. She's a grown up now, she has to. She's repeated these words to herself almost everyday for years. Pulling her scrubs on her mind is absent. It's been like this about a week, she knows it'll pass soon. She pulls her straight hair into a loose bun and grabs her keys.

Mer is the first one to greet her at the hospital, she hands her a coffee and offers a warm smile. "Maeve, I know this week has been hard on you. I can see it, something in you is different," she pauses for a moment. "And I know what you're feeling a little too well. The dark and twistyness of it." Another pause follows that sentence, "So if you ever need anything, I'm here." Maeve appreciates it, even though she feels no one truly knows this darkness.

It's a slow day, Maeve doesn't get paged at all. The interns have the day off, for god knows what. She's sitting on a bed in the e.r, bored out of her mind. "Hey," Maeve smiles, seeing Alex join her. He lays down next to her. "Hey, what are you up too?" Maeve thinks for a minute before she answers, "Oh nothing, just trying not to die from boredom." Alex laughs, looking Maeve in her eyes. Something in them sparkles, like there's life, a life to look forward to.
Then silence.
Maeve enjoyed silence, especially when there's the presence of someone she enjoys being around.

Junior year. Maeve never really enjoyed school. She made friends with some well known group,
just to fit in. She doesn't quite prefer them.

They had dragged her along to some house party. She sits down on some random persons couch. There's too many people there to count. Her boyfriend of the time sits next to her, handing her a red solo cup. Filled with God only knows what. She's already planning her escape, what excuse is she going to come up with to get her out of this house. Her boyfriend's rambling about something, probably video games or how him and his friends are going to do something stupid. She figured out a long time ago that if she just nodded her head and smiles, he won't know she's not listening.
"Hey, I'm gonna get out of here."  She starts to stand, "Hey, hey, hey. Why? You just got here."
Her boyfriend tries to pull her back down. She racks her brain for some sort of excuse, "I just don't feel like partying today."
After going back and forth for a bit, her boyfriend storms off, Maeve doesn't give a second thought and leaves.
She gets in her car,
finally alone.

"Maeve?" "Yeah?" Alex pauses before he responds, leaving Maeve's mind to think of every possible thing he could say. "I'm always here for you, and I don't want you going through this stuff alone," he finally turns to face her. His eyes soft, like he only sees her. "Thanks, Alex." She stops for a moment before saying again, "Thank you."
