A/N: My first author note so far. How r u guys finding the story so far?
Anyways I hate to admit that I just realised I haven't mentioned Gally yet...somehow. And I'm too lazy to go back and add him in where it doesn't fit. Terribly sorry, my apologies guys 😔~~~~💨🥾~~~~
The metallic screech echoed through the Glade, loud enough to bring everyone to a halt. Delilah froze mid-step, looking toward the Box, her heart pounding in her chest. She'd been here for a month now, long enough to recognize the deep, mechanical rumble that signaled a new arrival. Gladers were already gathering around the dark, rusted entrance to the Box, curiosity and excitement rippling through the crowd.
"New Greenie," she heard someone mutter beside her, a mixture of anticipation and weariness in their tone.
Delilah made her way through the crowd, feeling that familiar twist in her stomach as she glanced around, seeing faces filled with intrigue. It had been her just a month ago, bewildered and terrified, looking up into a ring of strangers. She remembered the blinding sunlight, the faces staring down at her as she tried to make sense of a world she didn't know. Now, she stood among the crowd, one of the veterans, watching someone else go through the same confusion she had once felt.
Alby, Newt and Gally were already standing by the Box, waiting as the metal doors slowly creaked open. Delilah's gaze shifted, a mix of sympathy and curiosity filling her as she leaned in, trying to catch a glimpse of the new arrival.
A boy appeared, lying in the center of the Box, blinking against the sudden burst of daylight. He was maybe her age, with dark, slightly messy hair and a lean build. He looked utterly disoriented, his eyes wide as he tried to push himself up. He looked around, scanning the faces of the Gladers surrounding him, his gaze filled with confusion and something raw, like fear.
"Alright, give him some space," Alby commanded, his voice steady and firm. He stepped closer to the edge of the Box and gestured for Gally to jump in.
Gally was the Keeper of Builders yet somehow Delilah had never interacted with him. He had a harsh face and bratty attitude so didn't get along very well with a lot of gladers. But in fairness he was a hard worker and majority of good intentions.
"Day one Greenie. Rise and Shine" is all Gally says before yanking the newcomer out of the box and onto the surrounding floor, at the feet of the crowd.
Delilah watched closely, feeling a strange mix of emotions. She didn't know this boy-didn't even know his name-but something about his expression tugged at her, reminding her so much of herself when she had first arrived. The way he looked around, half-crouched as if ready to defend himself, his gaze darting from face to face as if searching for answers.
"What's your name, Greenie?" Newt asked, stepping up beside Alby, his voice calm, soothing.
The boy's mouth opened, but no words came out. He looked down, blinking rapidly, his confusion deepening with every passing second. Delilah felt a pang of sympathy. It was like watching someone search for a word that wouldn't come, like the memory was right there, just out of reach.
"Can you talk?" Alby prompted, frowning slightly.
The boy looked up, his brow furrowed as he struggled to respond. He glanced at Alby, then Newt, his eyes filled with a lost, desperate look that made Delilah's chest tighten. She could see his hands trembling, his fingers clutching the sides of his pants as if grounding himself.
"I... I don't... I don't know," he stammered, his voice barely a whisper. He glanced around again, his eyes catching hers for the briefest second, a flash of vulnerability that made her heart ache. She gave him a small, encouraging nod, though she wasn't sure he even noticed.
Alby nodded, a faint look of understanding crossing his face. "Alright, alright. Happens to all of us. Memories are messed up when you first get here. Just... try to breathe."
The boy's breathing was ragged, shallow, his gaze darting around the Glade with that haunted, desperate look that Delilah knew too well. He took a shaky breath, his hands finally relaxing as he forced himself to stand straighter, trying to keep the fear from showing. Delilah admired his effort, recognizing the courage it took to stand up in front of all these strangers, knowing nothing, being so vulnerable.
"Welcome to the Glade," Newt said, a faint, reassuring smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "This is home now, Greenie."
The boy's expression flickered, disbelief and panic blending together. Before they knew it he leaped up and took of sprinting towards the middle of the glade.
"We've got a runner"
"Look at this shuck-face go"
"He's gonna eat klunk sooner or lat-" and with that the greenie face planted.
The boy's shoulders slumped slightly as he stood up, his eyes flickering with a thousand questions he probably didn't know how to ask. He took another look around the crowd that caught up to him, his gaze lingering on the Maze walls towering in the distance, his face going pale as he seemed to comprehend their sheer size.
"Look, take it easy," Alby added, his tone firm but encouraging. "We're all in the same boat here. We work together, keep each other safe. You'll figure it out, just like the rest of us."
Delilah saw the boy's eyes flicker with something-a faint spark of understanding, a small nod of acceptance. She watched him, feeling a strange connection to him already. Maybe it was the look in his eyes, that fierce determination to make sense of this place, despite the fear. Or maybe it was just the way he stood, slightly apart from the others, clearly still trying to wrap his mind around the reality of it all.
Alby and Newt started leading him away, walking him through the Glade, giving him the same tour she had received. Delilah stayed back, watching him from a distance, her gaze following the new Greenie as he took in his surroundings, his shoulders tensing every time he looked at the Maze walls.
As they walked past her, his gaze briefly flickered in her direction, and for a moment, their eyes met again. She offered him a small, encouraging smile. He was scared-she could see it in the way his hands twitched at his sides, the way he kept glancing over his shoulder as if expecting to see something lurking in the shadows.
Delilah didn't know what this new boy's arrival would mean, but she sensed that things were about to change. There was something different about him, something that stirred the air with a faint, almost unnoticeable tension. She couldn't shake the feeling that this boy-whoever he was-would have a part to play in the fate of the Glade.
Turning back to her chores, Delilah found herself glancing toward the boy one last time. He had no idea what awaited him here, the danger, the friendships, the struggles.
