Readers beware! As with many a fanfic, the chances that Souvent me Souviens will ever come to a satisfying end is slim. I started writing this fanfiction over two years ago now and rarely do I revisit, or make any significant progress, on it. The date I write this warning is November 7, 2024, and I am now the same age that Polly is by the end of Fire and Hemlock, which is sort of wild to think about. I first got hold of this book when I was around 12 years old (maybe 11), but I didn't make much headway. I made another attempt some time later, and made it a little further through than the first time, but I just couldn't seem to make it all the way to the end. I started again in high school, and it turns out that the third time really is the charm because not only did I reach the coda at last, but I felt I needed to read the book all the way through again that very instant. And I did. I have re-read Fire and Hemlock more times than I can count since that point. Fire and Hemlock is generally considered to be one of Diana Wynne Jones most ambitious novels, and as such the story is often endlessly confusing at times, but it is a joy to decipher; at least to me, anyhow. I have no idea where Souvent me Souviens is meant to go, or meant to end, which is where all the problems start. What I do know is that it is, perhaps, me trying to share the puzzle of Fire and Hemlock - possibly even decipher it - with a world outside of myself.
