Jada
The moment I leave Nicolo’s office, I practically sprint back to my own, my heart pounding, my mind a whirlwind of anger and confusion. How dare he? The audacity, the arrogance—the sheer nerve of that man. I can still feel his gaze on me, his words echoing in my head.
“You’re drawn to me, whether you like it or not.”
I clench my fists, leaning against the door to my office and taking a deep breath to steady myself. This can’t keep happening. I won’t let him get under my skin like this. I’m stronger than that.
Yet, no matter how much I tell myself to move on, to let it go, there’s a part of me—deep deep down, buried beneath layers of anger and frustration—that wonders if he’s right. The way he looked at me, the way his voice softened when he spoke to me… it was intoxicating, infuriating. And it scares the shit me.
My phone buzzes, pulling me from my thoughts. It’s a message from Soph: Lunch break soon? Let’s get some fresh air—coffee’s on me!
I hesitate for a moment, then type back a quick Yes. Meet you in ten.
A few minutes later, I find myself walking down the street with Soph, clutching a steaming cup of coffee as I try to clear my head. She’s chatting about some new yoga studio she wants to try, but I’m barely listening, my mind still caught up in the storm of emotions Nicolo has stirred up.
“So,” she says suddenly, giving me a sidelong glance. Tell me what the hell is going on with you?, Cami and I are worried”
I blink, startled. “What do you mean?”
“cut the shit, Jada. You’ve been a space cadet for weeks; you didn't even notice that Cami went vegan again.” My headshots up, shock clear on my face. “What !, when? Did she really?” her eyes widened in horror. “Of course not, Jada (Jesus). What’s up?”
I sigh, shaking my head and staring down at my coffee. “It’s… complicated.”
Soph stops walking, turning to face me with a serious expression. “Try me.”
I bite my lip, debating whether or not to tell her. But in the end, the words come spilling out. I tell her about Nicolo, about the tension between us, about the way he looks at me, the things he says.
When I’m done, she’s silent for a moment, her eyebrows raised. “Wow. Sounds like you’re in deep.”
I groan. “That’s the last thing I want. He’s fucking crazy, Soph. This… whatever it is, it’s intense, it’s risky, and it’s—”
“Hot as hell,” she finishes, grinning. “Don’t deny it, Jada. You wouldn’t be this worked up if you didn’t feel something.”
I shake my head, frustrated. “It’s more complicated than that. He’s… fucking nuts. And he doesn’t take no for an answer. I don’t know if I can handle someone like him.”
Soph shrugs. “Maybe you don’t have to. Maybe you just need to set boundaries and stick to them. Or, you know, let yourself have a little fun.”
“Fun? Boundaries? Did you listen to anything I just said” I murmur, giving her a skeptical look.
“Yeah. You've been working too hard, Jada. Maybe this is the universe telling you to let go of the reins for a bit.”
I let out a humorless laugh. “ release the reins to Nicolo Conti? Are you insane?”
She shrugs again, taking a sip of her coffee. “All I’m saying is, sometimes the things we try to fight the most are usually the things we need the most, and it's not like you're going to win. Why not enjoy it? Just… think about it, okay?”
I roll my eyes, but her words stick with me as we walk back to the office. I can still feel Nicolo’s gaze, still hear his voice. And for a brief, reckless moment, I wonder.
