After the invasion of Lord Demon, a secret project is found, and the subject goes out to foe-fill a promise to Maria Robotnik. However, he discovers what Maria really wanted, and decides to follow Team Monster when something big is going to happen.
It was some time ago, almost 50 years ago, and Maria Robotnik was cured of a terminal disease she had gotten. A family friend had taken her in, and helped cure her. His name was Professor Gerald Robotnik, and he was a father figure to Maria, and he helped her.
He then had a series of experiments to help cure Maria of her disease.
And with the experiments, it helped create the Ultimate Life-form, who cured Maria Robotnik.

His name was Shadow the Hedgehog. He became good friends with Maria, and she promised that she would bring him home with her to Earth.
Shadow had heard much about then, and was excited about it.
However, a paranoid general of G.U.N. had caught wind of this top secret project, and decided to shut it down. He already had one immortal being that wanted to create genocide, he didn't want another.
He brought some troops with him, and they stormed the facility. Shadow protected Maria the best he could, and the Professor was captured.
Maria then managed to close the door on G.U.N., and said, "Shadow. I want you to promise me something."
"Maria, what do you mean?" asked Shadow.
"Take care of the world I love and Shadow, I beg of you! Give them a chance to be happy!
Maria then gave Shadow a picture, and he look at it and is a picture of Maria and Gerald Robotnik.

"Please, Shadow... I need your help! Everyone's fate depends on... YOU!
"Maria!, I don't understand. What-"
Shadow was shoved into a pod, and Maria then started pushing buttons.
"Maria! What are you doing!?!" cried Shadow.
The G.U.N. Soldiers then burst through the door, and Mister Schmitz then came forth.

"Maria Robotnik. Release the Hedgehog. It's too dangerous," he said.
"No," said Maria, "He helped cure me, and I will be damned if he dies."
Maria then pressed another button, and stood her ground.
"I'm sorry about this then, " said Mister Schmitz.

Maria held her stomach, and saw blood coming from it.
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!" yelled Shadow.
Maria, with her dying breath, pulled the lever, and said, "Shadow, I beg of you... Please do it for me... for the better future! For all people who live on that planet... Give them a chance to be happy. Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason why you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow... the Hedgehog.
Maria then fell on the floor, and Shadow was launched away.
Later, he was captured, and put in cryogenic suspension.

Ironwood looked at the files, and set them down.
He couldn't believe that Mister Schmitz would do something like that. He didn't know what to do.
Unknown, someone had managed to Area 50-Something, and stumbled upon a pod.
