It was late at night when the librarian was putting away books. He heard a small noise by the children's section. The library was closed, so nobody but him and one student, his assistant, should have been in there. Just as he reached the children's section, a black cat walked past the bathrooms. He didn't really think much of it, except that the cat shouldn't have been there. He tried to follow it, but lost sight of it. He propped the back door by the bathrooms open, just enough for a cat to fit through.

After the librarian put all the returned books away, he sat at his desk with his assistant who was getting ready to leave. They both heard the sound of a book being dropped on the ground. They looked at each other and the librarian went to go look. It was one of the new children's books that was on display on the top of one of the smaller book shelves. He put it back on the stand and turned to come face to face with the black cat. The cat jumped from the shelf and scurried down the isle. The librarian went to the isle it jumped down and just as the cat turned to go down another isle, he finally noticed what seemed so off about it. The cat had no legs.

Spooked, the librarian told his student that they were done for the day. He shut the back door and locked it. They turned off the lights and locked up for the night. The librarian shook off the encounter and went home.

The following night, he saw the cat again. This time, he was a bit more prepared. He didn't follow the cat, but decided that if he didn't bother it then it wouldn't bother him. He left it alone, picked up any books off the floor, and pretended it wasn't there. The more he pretended it wasn't there, the more the activity spiked.

The lights of one of the private rooms came on, followed by giggles. It sent a shiver down his spine. He got up to take a look. There was nobody in the room but one of the office chairs was pulled away from the table. It was slightly rotating. He quickly turned off the light and shut the door. He peeked into the room through the small window in the door and instantly regretted it. Through the reflection of the windows in the room, he saw a little girl and she was petting the black cat.
