Chapter 1: The forgotten Little Girl
Julie and Nicholas Hatching were the parents of a young girl named Mary. Julie preferred attending parties and showed little interest in Mary, while Nicholas did care for her and attempted to spend time with her, though his job often kept him occupied. The maids looked after Mary, but they were not emotionally invested in her well-being. Julie and Nicholas struggled to maintain tutors because Mary would often yell and scream at them. The family resided in India, and Nicholas was perplexed by Julie's desire to live there after Mary's birth.
Mary had few friends, with her only companion being Sara Crewe, who was heading off to an English boarding school. Mary was an unhappy child and had never met her mother's half-siblings, although she did know her maternal grandparents, whom she loved dearly. She only interacted with her paternal grandparents. Julie, on the other hand, did not communicate with her half-siblings and had a strong dislike for her half-sister, as she was aware that Nicholas still had feelings for Lisa. Julie's mother disapproved of Julie's actions towards Lisa, believing it was wrong for Julie to take her boyfriend.
Mary had little affection for her grandfather Larry due to his unpleasant and rude behavior. She was aware that her Uncle Gaston wanted to distance himself from Uncle Larry, as Larry was creating issues for him and his wife. Mary enjoys reading and listening to Sara's stories, and she longs to see Sara again. Since she was too young, Mary was unable to attend boarding school. While engrossed in her favorite book, "Alice in Wonderland" she overheard her parents arguing.
"I can't believe you're going to see that witch!" Julie yells in frustration. "Lisa isn't a witch! You are! I've always cared for Lisa, and I can't stand you! I'm not visiting Lisa. I'm going to pay my respects to Rachel's family after her daughter passed away. I'm still friends with Lisa's family!" Nicholas shouts back.
"If you go to see that witch, I'm leaving!" Julie screams.
"Fine, don't let me stop you!" Nicholas retorts as he storms out.
Julie couldn't tolerate Nicholas any longer. She begins to pack her bags and instructs the maids to prepare Mary.
The maids helped Mary get dressed and then Julie pulled her towards the car. "Is Daddy coming with us?" Mary inquired.
"No, your dad is being difficult. We're going to a place where he won't be able to find us!" Julie responded angrily.
Mary felt frightened due to the heavy storm and rain, leaving her too scared to speak to her mother. Suddenly, Julie lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a lake.
Mary awoke in the hospital feeling pain in her head, throat, and eyes.
A nurse entered her room and Mary asked, "Where am I?"
The nurse, Nancy Wilson, explained, "You and your mother were in a car accident. We've called your dad, and he's on his way."
Concerned, Mary inquired, "Where is my mom?"
Nancy sadly informed her, "I'm sorry, but your mother didn't survive."
Mary simply responded, "Okay, I'm going back to bed."
Nancy was taken aback by Mary's lack of tears and apparent indifference to her mother's death.
