Keefe had never been so scared in his life. He thought he had known pain. When he was 8, he fell on the coordinator. And sure, maybe some of the stabbing feeling in his head was from the sudden lack of care or concern from either of his parents or being tackled into the trees at Evergreen by Biana, cuts and scrapes, even the twisted ankle he had gotten when he was 13. In his 3rd year at Foxfire, before his life had somehow fallen apart and been fixed at the same time, hed has has been slapped right on the cheek by Indivia Raquel for wearing Dafna Wooden crush cuffs. Even crashing into the cave wall with Foster, or the moment his mom's creepy-shadow things sunk in. The sudden pain coursing through him was WAY worse than the agony of getting slashed by Dimitar, the sudden lurch of his stomach and ringing in his ears, and the way the world swam behind his eyes and ears the moment the force hit him was way more worrying than anything he had felt before.
And the brutal stampede of pain, fury, fear, and guilt racing through the air from Foster did NOT help.
But he forced himself to stay on his feet, leaning on Fitz to get his bearings. He closed his eyes, focusing on the heartbeat pounding in his ears, and the shaky breaths he focused himself to draw before he opened his mouth to speak.
"That all you got?" Keefe shouted to his mother, pulling his lips into a smirk. Afterall, when everything else failed, deny, deny, deny were beginning his favorite words.
His mom clicked his tongue at him. and stepped just a little bit closer. "That's my Keefe. When will you realize that the more you fight who you are, the more the chance that the third step of Stellarlune WILL end you." She held up her hand, and with a snap, she had yet another dagger in her hand. "Now let's try this again."
"We can't fight her," Sophie whispered. "It would just give her more of a chance to get to you, and she could try to do who knows what kind of horrible-"
"Just more reasons for me to get sick of my mom doing experiments-whatever they are- on me."
Gisela snorted. "It's kind of pathetic that your little group hasn't figured out what the third step is," Gisela called, crossing her arms and studying him with such a coldly calculated look that no matter how hard Keefe searched, he couldn't find a drop of worry for her freaked, trembling son.
"Well, maybe it would help if you would stop trying to kill him!" Sophie snapped.
"When will you see that I'm not trying to kill him? I'm trying to heal his abilities so that he can be everything he was made to be."
"All he needs to be is Keefe Scencen!" Sophie shouted back, and the pure anger in her tone made Keefe's heart break a little more.
But it did help that she dropped Fitz's hand as she spoke.
The look on his face was pretty priceless.
Which was a pathetic, selfish thing to be thinking, especially in a battle. With his mom. So he forced himself to step forward, and unsheath a goblin throwing star. "You want to keep on being creepy and evil? You do that. But if you want to fight," He sucked in a shaking breath. "Then you're going to have to come get me."
He felt Foster's feelings spike. Panic first, then steely determination. There was also a solid, warm feeling. A little angry. A little fluttery. Almost protective. But he shoved those thoughts to the back of his mind. He would dive into THOSE fun little feelings later. Right now, he had a battle to win.
His mom smiled. Smiled. Then, she adjusted her hold on her dagger and tucked a strand of hair into her twisted updo. "Honestly, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this." The glint in her eyes suggested otherwise. "But, if you insist, I will not hesitate to remind you that we will always be ahead. We are stronger. Smarter. And," Her smile turned downright wicked. "If you insist, It will be arranged for blood to be spilled."
