"CAN you believe it?" I exclaimed, frustration evident in my tone. "A whole semester of enduring his useless lectures!"
"I know, right?" Gale chimed in, equally agitated. "Those lessons are completely pointless. But luckily, there's two days left before the summer break!"
We continued their animated discussion about our strict science professor—Just an hour ago, the professor had landed us in trouble, and now we were venting their frustrations. By our side, Evalyne and Hayley, the only girls in our group, walked quietly, listening to our complaints, chuckling and giggling ever so slightly.
As we neared the woods grounds, I halted to a stop. "Well uh, see you guys tomorrow." I bid and entered the woods.
I trotted along the woods, taking turns here and there before approaching the home's porch, with a sigh I twisted the knob and pushed the door open.
Upon entering, I found mom waiting for me with a serious expression as she sat on one of the chairs at the dinner table, tinged with sadness and concern. Instantly, I knew that trouble awaited me. Or at least, that's what I thought the matter was.
I entered the house with a heavy sigh, feeling the weight of the day still lingering on my shoulders. Sitting at the dinner table, mom looked up with a serious expression that instantly set my nerves on edge.
"Kalix, we need to talk," She said softly, but despite the softness in her voice it also tinged with concern.
My heart sank when I heard her speak. I knew that tone all too well. It was the same tone she had used when dad had passed away and the same tone she had used when we had to move to a new town. It was a tone that meant something serious was about to be discussed and it cannot wait.
"What is it, Mom?" I asked, trying to keep his voice steady, but a hint of trembling of my voice betrayed me.
I obediently moved a seat across from her, my mind racing with possibilities. Has something happened to Simon? Or maybe mom had received bad news about her job?
"Am I in trouble?" I said, barely above a whisper. "I'm sure—eighty percent sure—I didn't do anything wrong, promise, but if I did do something wrong I'm sorry."
"You're not in trouble, Kalix," Mom began slowly, choosing her words with care. "Do you remember when we talked about your father's family?"
"Yeah..." I furrowed my brows, trying to recall the conversation. "You said they were... different."
She nodded. "Yes. They're not like me. They are... somewhat supernatural"
"Supernatural?" I repeated, eyes wide in surprise. "supernatural how?"
"They're..." Mom hesitated, as if debating how much to reveal. "Well, they're not entirely human. They're part of a... different world."
I blinked, trying to process what mom was saying. "You mean like... Like in stories? Myths?"
She nodded again, her expression grave. "Yes, like in stories. They call themselves the Mythyricas, a combination of all mythical species that extinct years and years ago"
I felt a chill run down my spine. The Mythyricas. I had heard stories about them before, whispered tales of beings with powers beyond human comprehension.
"What... and Why?" I asked seriously, my voice barely above a whisper. "Why are you telling me this now?"
Mom reached across the table, taking my hand in hers. "Because, Kalix... you're one of them."
