Shaking it off, I walked around the couch and slipped my boots on, turning to face Nate. "Come on. Time for you to go meet my other boyfriend."
Looking shocked and really apprehensive, Nate looked at me pale faced and scared. "O..O...Other Boy..boyfriend???" Laughing, I shook my head and grabbed his wrist. "Yeah Babe. Come on, you'll love him." Pulling him off the couch, I walked into the den, and slipped out the back door, pulling him along after me. Lacing my fingers with his, and cuddling closer in the chilly air, I lead the way to the stable. Turning to look at me in blatant disbelief, Nate began stuttering with embarrasment. "Your... your boyfriend is the stable boy???? You're kidding me right Roj!? You take me to dinner at your dads place, and then invite me out back to meet your boyfriend?! What the hell! I thought we were together! And I can't believe you'd cheat on me with some stable hand! This is just bullshit! You'd really chose a stable hand who smells like horse shit over me?! You obviously have nothing going on up in your head, just like everyone says."
Processing what he'd just said, I turned to stare at him in shock and hurt, trying to hide the tears starting to form in my eyes. My mind slowly began to form some coherent words, but I still stuttered. "You.. you think I'm stupid? People at school think I'm stupid? Are you kidding me? Or is it crazy? Do they think I'm crazy because I face reality everyday while they live in Candyland? This is insane. I've told you about this before, and you were cool with it. I can't believe you're reacting this way!'
Looking at me in confusion, Nate tried to process what I'd just said "You've told me about this boyfriend of yours before? And I approved? That doesn't sound anything like me, or something I'd say. And yeah. The whole damn school thinks you're crazy, but I tell them to shut the hell up. I know your life is crazy, and that you have to deal with alot more than they do. It's made you who you are, but it's made you different than them. And different is crazy to small minded people. Now before I flip out again, can you introduce me to this boyfriend so I can deck him and leave?"
Turning around, fuming visibly, I let out a shrill whistle and heard the clicking of a lock follow soon after. Several seconds later, I heard the methodic sound of hoofbeats on pavement, and I smiled. "There's my baby! Come here and give me some love babe. I have kisses just for you!" Turning around while laughing, I saw Nate standing there, eyeing me like I was certifiably insane. Which in a sense, I guess I am. I am insanely in love with this boy. Hearing a soft nicker, and a low snort as the hoofbeats got closer, I stepped forward with my hand held out, a handful of oats filling my palm. Soon after, a pair of velvet soft lips carresed my hand as my handsome baby began eating his snack happily. "Nate, meet Tahkoa. My childhood boyfriend, and all around best friend." Turning my head to glance at Nate, I saw his face slowly turn purple with embarrasment. "Oh, right. Sorry babe, I forgot about him. You've told me about him alot. And I guess I should have known considering your room is plastered with pictures of him and a photo collage of the two of you that says 'perfect couple'. Sorry I overreacted hunny. I should have known better than to think you'd cheat on me."
Laughing, I returned to my baby, stepping closer and wrapping my arms around his neck. "Hey handsome. Come here and meet somebody. And play nice, he isn't used to guys as big as you." Almost as if he understood me, Tahkoa gently stepped forward and extended his neck, nickering softly. Nate, looking unsure of what to do, turned to me quickly. "Uhmm.. babe? What do I do?" Snickering at my boyfriends lack of horse knowledge, I tried not to be too sarcastic. "Stick your hand out, let him sniff it. If he likes you, he'll snuggle your hand, or lip it softly, which means he likes you, but you'll be his best friend if you can magically make a carrot appear in your hand." Nodding in understanding, Nate slowly stuck his hand toward Tahkoa, then stopped quickly. "Roj? What if he doesn't like me?" Now unable to control my laughter, I decided to toy with him. "If he doesn't like you, he'll bite your fingers and walk away, probably smacking you in the face with his tail." Which wasn't exactly an outright lie. He'd been known to do crazier things. My horse was smart, and he thought he was human. Which is why he was often referred to as my boyfriend.
Nate now looked terrified, and I couldn't help but laughing. "Babe, I'm joking. Sort of. If he doesn't like you, he'll just sniff you and walk off. He's a big baby, and never hurt a fly, so you'll be fine. " Walking over to Nate, I grabbed his hand and pushed it forward, encouraging Tahkoa with a soft clicking sound. Slowly, Tahkoa leaned forward, and sniffed Nate's hand, then nuzzled it gently, before using Nate's hand as a rubbing post, and vigorously rubbing his forhead onto the palm of his hand. Chuckling, I walked over and pushed on his chest, forcing him to take a step back. Making kissing noises, I turned his head towards me. Nuzzling my neck, Tahkoa gently lipped my cheek, kissing me and making me laugh. Turning my back to him, I let him use me as his scratching post, laughing while he almost pushed me over on my face. When he finished, I turned to face Nate, who had been standing shyly a few feet away. "Time to go meet the rest of my four legged family."
Walking towards the stable holding hands with Nate, I could hear Tahkoa trotting behind us, snorting softly. Reaching the barn door, I walked in quietly, knowing they'd be sleeping. Immediately, Tahkoa let out a soft whinny, and every stall within sight stirred to life, as head after head popped over stall doors, nickering and whinnying softly, all vying for my attention. "Nate, welcome to the family. Do me a favor, and stand right here for a second, I'm gonna invite them over, but they'll all come out at once, and I don't want you to get hurt, since they are kind of pushy at first." Looking at me quizically, he stepped to the side and leaned against the wall, obviously waiting for me to begin unlatching doors. Instead, I sang out a low note, and waited. Immediately, every stall door began to click as my horses bit the locks and pushed the door open, all trotting towards me at the same time. "Hey babies. Come on, come say hi. I missed you!" Laughing as my horse family surrounded me, I began patting and petting heads and shoulders, trying to give equal attention to each of my horse children. One girl in particular stepped forward, and began incessantly nudging my shoulder. "Hey, Momma. How's my beautiful girl doing tonight, huh?"
Turning to see Nate standing against the barn door, I motioned him over. "Babe, meet Adora, my mom's horse, and the mother of half the horses in this barn, including Tahkoa. Say Hi, and be nice about it. She's tempermental, but a good girl." Pulling a sugar cube from my pocket, I stuck my hand out, secretly giving her a treat before the others saw. Walking away, I walked into the tack stall and grabbed a saddle.
"Nate, take this, and set it down over there. It's time you saw my boyfriend in action, where he is always at his best. Jumping." And with that, I turned around, haltered Tahkoa, and led him over to be saddled and brushed.
