From the moment I read the Ryshannon Chronicles, I knew that Aravis-Brightspell was a singular talent and they have not disappointed with The Gathering Dark.
From the opening chapter, this spellbinding storyl whisks readers into a world where the boundaries between the living and the dead are blurred. The story's protagonist, a clairvoyant medium, finds herself reluctantly drawn into a high-stakes ghostly interview - and plunged headfirst into a harrowing mystery.
The author wields masterful storytelling, building an atmosphere of trepidation and intrigue right from the start. We can't help but be captivated by the medium's internal debates as she grapples with whether to proceed, knowing the dangers that likely lie ahead. And when she finally comes "face to face" with her ethereal subject, the tension ratchets up exponentially.
Things only become more dire in the second chapter, as layers of deception are peeled back to reveal a horrifying reality. The vivid, almost cinematic descriptions immerse us in a frightening backdrop, while the plot weaves a frantic tale of desperation and impending doom. The ghostly encounters feel fresh and imaginative, and the demonic antagonist is chilling in his unsettling normality.
As the story progresses, the mystery deepens, and the stakes continue to rise. The author skillfully withholds key details, keeping readers firmly in the grip of the narrative's currents. Just when we think we've figured things out, a new twist emerges to upend our assumptions.
