Good Morning Bad Night

It's morning outside, the birds are chirping and the air is warm yet damp. Sanemi and his brother Genya are getting ready to go out to sell goods around the neighborhood.

"Hurry up Genya!" yelled Sanemi to the bathroom where Genya was getting ready.

Sanemi was 16 and Genya was 11, their family was not wealthy but they had a good life. They would go out and work by selling wood, charcoal, and other goods.

Their mom stayed at home and took care of the rest of their siblings, though she was very small she worked all day and all night, cooking, cleaning, and selling goods at the market.

They still made little money and barely enough to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads.

Sanemis younger brother Koto ran up to Sanemi and hugged him tight.

"Please let me come with you!!!" Koto begged, making doe eyes up at Sanemi. Sanemi sighed, closed his eyes and shook his head slowly.

"Not today Koto me and Genya we don't have room on the wagon to carry you. We have a lot of deliveries to make today."

"Aw... how about tomorrow?" whined Koto. "Alright tomorrow." Sanemi agreed.

Suddenly Sumi and Teiko come bursting into the small house panting and bolting toward the kitchen.

"Hey no running!" hollered their mom, Shizu.

Genya suddenly walked out of the bathroom and Shuya, another one of Sanemi's siblings rushed into the bathroom screaming at Hiroshi chasing him"

"Ok ok. Come here everyone." said their mom in a calming voice.

"Since your father is no longer around we all need to start pulling your weight around here and stop leaving everything to me, Sanemi, and Genya. Alright?"

"Alright!" said everyone else.

Sanemi walked out the door, Genya tailing not too far behind.

They walked for a bit and made a few deliveries but suddenly Genya stopped which then caused Sanemi to stop and turn back.

"What are we supposed to do now that dad is dead?" asked Genya monotony

Their dad was a very bad man who abused them and their mom who got killed by a customer who he had a grudge with. Their father was also a very large man and to shield them from his beatings their mom would throw her small body over them.

"We are the oldest now. We must take care of the family ok? No matter what it takes." said Sanemi.

Sanemi then smiled and then laughed at how serious Genya looked. Genya smiled back and they then walked off to finish the deliveries.

Later that day when they got back to the house they cleaned up and got ready for dinner.

They walked out of the bathroom and sat down on the pillows on the ground surrounded by their siblings.

Their mom walked into the kitchen with a few trays in her hand and Sanemi got up and went over to help their mom.

Sanemi set the plates from the trays down in front of each of his siblings and then their drinks. They all thanked him and his mom sat down to eat calling Sanemi over to her.

"I'm going out tonight to buy some goods from the store down the street ill be back before daybreak. I need you to watch your siblings. Alright?"

"Alright." Sanemi agreed sitting back down at his spot getting ready to enjoy the meal his mom cooked for him and his siblings.

He savored every bite of his meal and so did his siblings but little did they know that this was one of their last good meals for a long while.

After Sanemi and Genya's mom left the house Sanemi helped his siblings get ready for bed.

Once they all got in bed they fell asleep easily but Sanemi couldn't shake off the feeling that something had happened to their mom. He soundlessly dozed off into a light sleep still being able to hear what was happening.

After long hours of nervous and restless sleep Sanemi heard Genya ask, "Do you think moms on her way back? Shes never been gone this long."

"Your still up?" Sanemi asked Genya and Genya nodded. Sanemi started to get up and then Genya said "Hey, where are you going?" "To look for mom the suns almost up so ill be back soon. Watch your siblings." said Sanemi.

Genya nodded and Sanemi left out the house to look for their mom.

Genya lay in his bed with his head leaning on his hand. Suddenly his siblings all said his name and he turned to them and asked, "Hey your up what gives?" "Were worried about mom shes never been out this late and wheres brother?" asked Sumi.

"Big bro just went out to look for her they will be back soon. Dont worry, now lets get you all back to sleep." responded Genya thoughtfully.

Soon enough Koto was in Genyas arms asleep with most of his other siblings other than Teiko and Sumi were the only other people awake in their house.

"Are you sure moms OK? The suns about to come out and her and big brother still aren't back yet." said Sumi getting more worried by the second. Genya looked up at her and responded with a hesitant nod. 

Suddenly a figure approached the door and hobbled closer, Sumi and Teiko ran towards it quickly yelling "Mom!" which caused Hiroshi to perk up rubbing his eyes tiredly. Genya burst out "Hold up that might not be mom!"

The creature burst through the door in an instant scratching and killing all of his other siblings quickly and scratching Genya's face badly.

Genya yelled holding Koto's dead body in his arms. He was shaking and crying, but suddenly heard Sanemi yell "Genya run!"
