~a week after their wedding~

I woke up and smiled down at my wife, her small figure snuggling closer to me as she slept. I leaned down and kissed her forehead. It had taken her some time to accept my "job," but she came around eventually and we agreed to try and stay out of each other's way during work.

I did my best to keep my men out of her work, trying to at least make her job easier. I wanted to show her that I cared, so a week after we married I planned a nice dinner at home. Just as I finished cooking and had set everything out on the table, my phone rang with an unfamiliar number.

"Hello?" I asked, holding my phone to my ear.

"Hello, is this Artemis Vermillion?" A professional woman's voice asked.

"Yes? Who is this?"

"I'm calling from Medical City Denton (A/N:I was born here!). I'm calling to inform you that we just admitted your wife, Kora Vermillion, due to multiple knife wounds."

I nearly dropped the wine in my hand. "What? I- Give me the address!"

The nurse gave me the address and I quickly ran to my car and started driving. Unfortunately, I hit rush hour traffic just as I reached the halfway point to the hospital. I darted between cars in my small, red car before getting pulled over for reckless driving.

"Do you know why I pulled you over ma'am?" The officer asked, his southern accent thick.

"I was driving funny." I sighed. "Look, I'm just trying to get to my wife in the hospital."

"So you're one of them-"

"Yes I am, got a problem with that?" I snapped, shifting to show him the edge of my Ruby Royal tattoo.

His face paled and he quickly apologized. "I-I'm sorry ma'am, let me escort you through traffic..."

With his help, I managed to get to the hospital in a few minutes, rather than half an hour.
